Module Overview

Advanced research methods are a key differentiator of the approach of work and organizational psychologists to their practice with organizational clients and as scientists in conducting research in organizations.

This module is designed to enable students to develop skills and knowledge of advanced techniques that can be deployed flexibly in various research and practice settings. Learning will be key to student preparation for the dissertation.

Assessment Strategy

The assessment strategy is designed to provide students with the opportunity to demonstrate:

Practical and technical skills in applying advanced research methods.

Thus, the summative assessment for this module consists of:

  • A 3000-word report based on analysis of a dataset provided by the module team

  • A 3000-word report based on conducting an interview, and content analysing the transcript

Formative assessment

Although not formally assessed, ongoing practical activities will enable student progress to be checked.


Verbal feedback from the module team based on activities conducted in class. In writing feedback to the summative assessment of the individual portfolio.

Module aims

  • Build technical skills in advanced research methods, focusing on conducting research in organizations.
  • Develop skills and understanding of advanced research designs for theory testing (e.g. collecting longitudinal data for moderator and mediator testing; experimental design).
  • Introduce and allow practice of quantitative analytical techniques: factor analysis, structural equation modelling, multi-level modelling, network analysis, moderation and mediation testing.
  • Introduce and allow proactice of qualitative analytic techniques: content and thematic analysis, discourse analysis.
  • Develop students' critical understanding of the application of methods in research and practice.

The learning and teaching methods include:


  • Lectures from the Module Team

  • Practical activities applying techniques of analysis

  • Assignments that involve application of advanced techniques to draw conclusions

Indicated Lecture Hours (which may also include seminars, tutorials, workshops and other contact time) are approximate and may include in-class tests where one or more of these are an assessment on the module. In-class tests are scheduled/organised separately to taught content and will be published on to student personal timetables, where they apply to taken modules, as soon as they are finalised by central administration. This will usually be after the initial publication of the teaching timetable for the relevant semester.
