Indicative content includes:
The Principles and Priorities of Public Health
The social determinates of health, illness and health inequalities
Theories of Health Promotion and behaviour change
Current legislation and policy in relation to identified areas of health need and inequalities
Motivation and empowerment tools and strategies in relation to effective and sustained behaviour change models to achieve self efficay and wellbeing
To develop an understanding of epidemiology and the ability to critically analyse public health data
Health education in relation to specific target groups
The ethical issues associated with health promotion
Altered physiology and pharmacology associated with health inequalities
The importance of inter-professional and interagency working to make the best use of finite resources
Collaborative working to achieve health improvement in individuals, groups and societies
Health promotion across the lifespan aimed at key groups such as children, young people and older people
Health promotion for maternal, child and family health
The legal basis for child and family law
Effective communication strategies and techniques

Assessment Strategy
The assessment strategy is designed to provide students with the opportunity to demonstrate achievement of module learning outcomes.
Thus, the summative assessment for this module consists of:
2000 word essay:
Select one of the indicators listed under Health Improvement Objective 2 in the Public Health Outcomes Framework 2016 – 2019. Discuss how you can promote healthy lifestyles to an individual, group or community which includes a specific planned health promotion intervention.
Formative assessment
Students will engage in a supported debate, looking at the key public health promotion topics to be considered within the essay.
Feedback
Through small regular seminars informal feedback is provided at the end of each taught session.
The encouragement of students to contribute to an ongoing feedback loop on Surreylearn that will inform and advise key module staff on the needs of students within the learning environment
Module aims
- To develop students' knowledge and understanding of the evolving public health agenda and the need to promote health and wellbeing across the lifespan of individuals, groups and communities.The student will be supported in developing and understanding of the underpinning political,ethical,sociological and psychological concepts which promote wellbeing within a wide range of social contexts.

Indicated Lecture Hours (which may also include seminars, tutorials, workshops and other contact time) are approximate and may include in-class tests where one or more of these are an assessment on the module. In-class tests are scheduled/organised separately to taught content and will be published on to student personal timetables, where they apply to taken modules, as soon as they are finalised by central administration. This will usually be after the initial publication of the teaching timetable for the relevant semester.
