Module Overview

The module is based upon a philosophy of learning whereby students will consider care from birth to end of life. Assessment and care of the new-born, through childhood to adolescence and adulthood will be considered. This will be followed with older Patients with long term medical conditions, their holistic care and the wider impact of illness on family and society.

Assessment Strategy

The assessment strategy is designed to provide students with the opportunity to demonstrate knowledge of health conditions and care of patients across the lifespan from birth to end of life care.

The summative assessment for this module consists of:


  • An Essay considering an illness from childhood or older age. How the conditions impact on the patient and their carers, and avenues of support that are available (2000 words).                          100%

Module aims

  • This module aims to:• Consider the specific needs and illness associated with new-born children, young children and adolescents
  • • Encourage students to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the impact of a long-term condition on the patient, family, carers and on society
  • • Consider how to actively assess the patient’s capability and provide empowerment for self care
  • • Consider the referral pathways and support available to patients to encourage self management
