Module Overview

This module will expose students to all aspects of the ODP clinical role. Its learning outcomes recognise progression from Level 4 to Level 5 in both theoretical and practical learning. The module is designed to develop a student’s critical thinking and specialist practice knowledge in a variety of settings. Clinical Practice 2 prepares the student for Level 6 study and achieves the basic clinical standards required for a student to carry out safely the role of the ODP.

Module content

Indicative content includes:

• There will be specific exposure to emergency and trauma situations and will require the students to be involved in ‘out-of-hours’ working. Good interdisciplinary communication and working within the multi-disciplinary team should be understood and demonstrated.


• Patient transfers


• Critical Care Inc. ITU and A&E


• Paediatric and Maternal placements


• Performing the role of the ODP in other departments e.g. MRI

Assessment Strategy

The assessment strategy is designed to provide students with the opportunity to demonstrate clinical skills and underpinning knowledge consistent with Year 2 practice; and is to be considered as part of an ongoing assessment process. Direct Observation of Practice (DOPs) are designed to capture key clinical competencies, while Clinical Evaluation Exercises (CEx) allow the student to demonstrate holistic clinical judgment and critical thinking.

Thus, the summative assessment for this module consists of:

• Students are required to submit a completed practice assessment portfolio document (PAD) showing competency in all of the professional practice skills. This is a pass / fail.


• Students are also required to complete a practice diary reflecting on aspects of experiences within the practice setting demonstrating the underpinning knowledge relating to their experiences


• 34 (17 different clinical practice areas) DOPs (addresses learning outcomes: 1, 3, 4, 6, 7, 9, 11, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 21, 22, 27 & 30)


• 6 CEx’s (addresses learning outcomes: 1, 2, 4, 5, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 14, 15, 16, 18, 19)


• Direct clinical observation (addresses learning outcomes: all 1 – 31)

Formative assessment

Multiple formalised 1-2-1 formative assessments with lead mentor at several key stages through the practice module; designed to highlight and inform student of their practice and facilitate guided reflection.

Feedback

• Continuous feedback from mentors and professional colleagues


• Formal formative feedback in 1-2-1 tutorials with lead practice mentor

Indicated Lecture Hours (which may also include seminars, tutorials, workshops and other contact time) are approximate and may include in-class tests where one or more of these are an assessment on the module. In-class tests are scheduled/organised separately to taught content and will be published on to student personal timetables, where they apply to taken modules, as soon as they are finalised by central administration. This will usually be after the initial publication of the teaching timetable for the relevant semester.
