This module is designed to introduce students to the basics of lighting and stage electrics for theatre and live events. Students will gain an understanding of the mainstay of lighting equipment, associated techniques and the fundamental processes used in a professional production environment.

Industry standard stage lighting equipment identification and it’s uses.
Basic Lighting Design theory. Colour, depth, and form.
Electrical calculation and safety.
Industry standard Tools.
Rigging, labelling and preparing a lighting rig.
Basic Console operation.
Hard-patching and Soft-patching.
Basic Lighting communication protocols.
Basic equipment Maintenance.
Stage Lighting paperwork and supporting paperwork.

Thus, the summative assessment for this module consists of:
- Theoretical lighting project – Presentation. 100%
A presentation delivered in groups of a lighting design project. Taught lessons will be delivered on this submission
- On going formative feedback from practical lessons – ( Formative )
Feedback will be given on a one to one basis at the end of practical taught lighting lessons.
Summative mark sheets returned to students via surrey learn.
- Introduce the working practices associated with the lighting team engaged in theatre production.
- Develop knowledge of contemporary and emerging technologies,
- Develop knowledge of the current legislation (e.g. Health and Safety).
- Develop knowledge of practical skills associated with the roles associated with that team.

Methods of Teaching / Learning
The learning and teaching strategy is designed to:
Encourage the students to engage in practical taught sessions, alongside classroom based theory lessons.
The learning and teaching methods include:
- Taught practical lessons in a studio space – 30 hours
- Taught sessions in a classroom enviroment – 15 hours
- Independent study 105 hours
Indicated Lecture Hours (which may also include seminars, tutorials, workshops and other contact time) are approximate and may include in-class tests where one or more of these are an assessment on the module. In-class tests are scheduled/organised separately to taught content and will be published on to student personal timetables, where they apply to taken modules, as soon as they are finalised by central administration. This will usually be after the initial publication of the teaching timetable for the relevant semester.
