Module Overview

This module provides students with advanced knowledge and understanding of theory and practice relating to chronic conditions. This module has been designed in accordance with requirements (stage 1) of the British Psychological Society's Division of Health Psychology accreditation criteria. This module addresses the following curriculum areas for a British Psychological Society accredited Health Psychology Masters degree: contexts and perspectives in health psychology, physiological and psychosomatic disease processes, client groups and other stakeholders, measurement issues, health-related behavior and cognitions, interventions and healthcare and professional settings. This module will students to understand how to apply health psychology theory and practice to different chronic conditions and patient populations.

Assessment Strategy

The assessment strategy is designed to provide students with the opportunity to demonstrate they have acquired a sound understanding of the psychological aspects related to living with chronic diseases.

Thus, the summative assessment for this module consists of:

• Practical Based Assessment - Designing A Patient Information Leaflet –1000 Words


• Coursework – Essay 2000 words

Students can practice both assignments in class

- Verbally in class throughout the semester in general, and in particular on both occasions when students practice their assignments in class

- In writing, on the feedback form

Module aims

• This module aims to provide students with an in-depth understanding of the causes, risk factors, and consequences of chronic medical conditions. To this end, the role of psychological factors in understanding the emotional, behavioural, clinical, and social consequences of chronic medical conditions are considered. The module aims to facilitate students' critical understanding of the research evidence-base and the role of psychologists and psychological interventions in managing chronic conditions

Indicated Lecture Hours (which may also include seminars, tutorials, workshops and other contact time) are approximate and may include in-class tests where one or more of these are an assessment on the module. In-class tests are scheduled/organised separately to taught content and will be published on to student personal timetables, where they apply to taken modules, as soon as they are finalised by central administration. This will usually be after the initial publication of the teaching timetable for the relevant semester.
