Module Overview

This module explores cultural and social divisions for males and females in contemporary society and challenges taken for granted attributions of gender characteristics in relation to concrete social practices. It also examines historical processes of social change and development for men and women.

Thus, the summative assessment for this module consists of:

• 1500 word critique of article. Students select one article from a menu of four. Submitted in week 8


• 2000 word essay based on selecting one question from a selection of four. Submitted at the end of the course.

Formative assessment and feedback

Students are asked to complete ‘homework’ activities each work. These include reading materials and answering questions about them. They may also be asked to undertake other activities, such as watching film, TV or internet clips to act as points for discussion.

Students receive in-class formative feedback on their homework activities. They are also given the opportunity for one-to-one tutorials with the module leader prior to submitting the summative assessments. Two half sessions are also devoted to the summative assignments.

The learning and teaching strategy is designed to:

The learning and teaching strategy is based around didactic delivery methods, in the form of lectures, in addition to student reading and classroom activities, including peer working and peer reviewing.

The learning and teaching methods include:

• 11 x 2 hour sessions consisting of both lecture and seminar discussion


• Weekly reading and seminar preparation

 

 

Indicated Lecture Hours (which may also include seminars, tutorials, workshops and other contact time) are approximate and may include in-class tests where one or more of these are an assessment on the module. In-class tests are scheduled/organised separately to taught content and will be published on to student personal timetables, where they apply to taken modules, as soon as they are finalised by central administration. This will usually be after the initial publication of the teaching timetable for the relevant semester.
