Module Overview
This module enables students to conduct significant independent study, supported by a supervisor and resulting in either written or part written/part practical outcomes. The work may be entirely individual project (a personal research project) or students may work together on a project, with each student having particular responsibility. Examples of group projects would be collaborative work with staff/students in Children’s Nursing, outreach activities, workplace projects, or academic research on specialist areas. Students will need to identify and document their learning through the module, working with a mentor and supervisor (these may be the same, based on the project).

Students will meet with a mentor/supervisor (these may be the same/different depending on the project, the supervisor would be attached to the University). In discussion with advisor(s), students will develop an appropriate workplan, with clear dates for:

The module will be expected to address the contribution of the project to the context and summarise the findings of the work. Subject to agreement by the Director of Studies, the module may be taken internationally and may occur outside usual timetabling practices. Students may be required to take a series of lectures/classes/seminars at or outside the University as part of their learning, or to meet with individuals/organisations who may be relevant to the project.

Assessment Strategy
The assessment strategy is designed to provide students with the opportunity to demonstrate
identification of a specific research area and question

Thus, the summative assessment for this module consists of either:
A) A Written Project: Written element = 100% (3000 words)
OR
B) A Part-Written / Part-Practical Project: Written element = 75% (2250 words) and Practical element = 25%
OR
C) A Part-Written / Part-Practical Project: Written element = 50% (1500 words) and Practical element = 50%
Formative assessment and feedback
Supervisors will advise on the development of the project and feedback on a draft copy, or sections of draft material, or on rehearsals – depending on the nature of the project.

- Enable students to identify and monitor opportunities for specific, independent learning in a particular project.

Methods of Teaching / Learning
The learning and teaching strategy is designed to prepare students to locate themselves as independent researchers within an existing academic field. The module will enable students to demonstrate methodologies, methods and strategies for effective research, and time and opportunity to try particular approaches in a project. A supervisor, who will monitor the students’ emerging work, will support students. Staff will be able to comment in person and on draft material.
The learning and teaching methods include:
4 hours tutorials (this may include supervision of practical sessions if the work will include a practical component).
Where feasible and appropriate, the convenor may also schedule compulsory seminars (indicatively: 3x 2-hour seminars)
Indicated Lecture Hours (which may also include seminars, tutorials, workshops and other contact time) are approximate and may include in-class tests where one or more of these are an assessment on the module. In-class tests are scheduled/organised separately to taught content and will be published on to student personal timetables, where they apply to taken modules, as soon as they are finalised by central administration. This will usually be after the initial publication of the teaching timetable for the relevant semester.
