SPECIAL TOPIC: CREATIVE PRACTICE - 2019/0

This module will investigate a specific area of creative performance practice, that will change yearly based on the specialisms of available staff and/or on the broader thematic or contextual issues current in any given year. Indicative topics might include:
- Directing and Artistic Leadership;
- Movement for Theatre;
- Physical Comedy;
- Studio-based investigations of specific practitioners or training methods (such as Tadeusz Kantor, Anne Bogart, Jacques LeCoq);
- Scenography and Costume Design;
- Puppetry and Object Theatre.
The module is studio-based, and is intended to offer students a means of expanding their repertoire of knowledge and skill-sets for creating performance. It is intended to explore ways in which creative practice is a form of critical enquiry. The assessment for the module will be a performance showing in small groups, accompanied by a brief presentation/discussion of the work presented.

Both the content and format of this module will vary from year to year, but in each year, the module will require students to engage with sustained studio practice, and to work with creative processes individually, alongside peers, and in tutor-led sessions. The module will further require a careful reading of select texts (dramatic and/or critical), and will ask the student to engage in independent research around the given topic.

The assessment strategy is designed to provide students with the opportunity to demonstrate their understanding and command of a specific creative practice or set of practices.
Thus, the summative assessment for this module consists of:
- Performance with presentation/discussion. Students will be required to present brief -- but complete and cohesive -- creative work of their choosing/devising, in relation to the practice(s) under study, and then discuss that work with auditors, tutors, and/or examiners.
- Students will undertake a dry run presentation of their work in progress midway through the term.
- In addition to the feedback provided for the dry run, practical feedback will be provided continually in the class sessions.
- Develop students’ knowledge of and skills in a specific area of creative practice, otherwise unexplored in the programme’s curriculum
- To develop analytical, historical, critical, and/or contextual approaches to the making of theatre and performance.

Methods of Teaching / Learning
The learning and teaching strategy is designed to:
Provide students with sustained exposure to a set of specific creative practices, and offer students the opportunity to demonstrate, in practical/performative as well as discursive terms, their understanding and command of those practices.
The learning and teaching methods include:
- Tutor-led studio work;
- Independent rehearsals/workshps (individual and/or group);
- Independnet Research
- Discussion and presentation;
Indicated Lecture Hours (which may also include seminars, tutorials, workshops and other contact time) are approximate and may include in-class tests where one or more of these are an assessment on the module. In-class tests are scheduled/organised separately to taught content and will be published on to student personal timetables, where they apply to taken modules, as soon as they are finalised by central administration. This will usually be after the initial publication of the teaching timetable for the relevant semester.
