Indicative content includes:

• 
  understand the application and interview process in terms of seeking employment;
  


• 
  understand how to use information technology in relation to research reports and scientific presentations (oral and poster);
  


• 
  prepare a scientific report/presentation based on a chemical company/chemical publication;
  


• 
  understand the nature of the financing of industry through shares and share-dealing; and
  


• 
  be aware of the qualities required for teamwork, leadership and communication through practical experience;
  


• 
  spreadsheets, setting up tables, plotting data and functions; macros and applications; graphing and statistical functionality for chemical problems.
  

Assessment pattern

Alternative Assessment

Failure of the module due to the group unit of assessment (part of Shares Game) will require the completion of an essay on the financial shares market and the selected chemical companies. 

Assessment Strategy

The assessment strategy is designed to provide students with the opportunity to demonstrate sufficient skills of the above.

Thus, the summative assessment for this module consists of:

• oral presentations (individual) 15%


• professional writing (precis) 15%


• Shares Game: contributes 40% to the module mark which is split as follows: presentation (10), Excel spreadsheet (5), report on individual performance (20), report on group performance (5)


• Practical Excel examination (2 hours) 30%.

• interim Shares Game progress through feedback on progress, suppplemented with examples of good practice


• class based Excel exercises

Learning outcomes

Methods of Teaching / Learning

The learning and teaching strategy is designed to build on skills gained in FHEQ 4 (CHE1031 and 1037):

• 
  develop the necessary skills for professional employment;
  


• 
  develop a professional approach to report writing;
  


• 
  increase communication within teams; and
  


• 
  enhance mathematical problem solving abilities.
  

• individual and group presentations;

• poster and personal portfolio (electronic); and


• practical use of advanced Excel in workshops

Indicated Lecture Hours (which may also include seminars, tutorials, workshops and other contact time) are approximate and may include in-class tests where one or more of these are an assessment on the module. In-class tests are scheduled/organised separately to taught content and will be published on to student personal timetables, where they apply to taken modules, as soon as they are finalised by central administration. This will usually be after the initial publication of the teaching timetable for the relevant semester.
