Module Overview

Structural design is required in many civil engineering applications, whether it is a design of a building or a bridge or another type of structure. This module, which follows on from ENG1076 Structural Design, introduces the students to the design of reinforced concrete structural elements and reinforces their steel design knowledge obtained in ENG1076 to a deeper context and more advanced applications. The behaviour of concrete and steel structural elements under different types of loading are first discussed and the structural design code procedures and philosophy to be followed for the design of reinforced concrete and steel structures are presented.

Module content

The module covers design of both reinforced concrete and structural steel design.

In reinforced concrete design, the following topics are covered:

  • Bending and shear in beams - types of failure, analysis and design

  • Columns – Non-slender column design using charts.

  • Reinforcement provision - types and sizes, maximum and minimum areas, cover, bar spacing.

In structural design design, the following topics are covered:

  • Columns in multi-storey buildings

  • Beams – unrestrained beams, design for lateral-torsional buckling

  • Bolted and welded connections – basic behaviour of bolts and welds, analysis and design of simple steel connections

This module is within core subject of Structures, and the threads of Design, Sustainability, and Health and Safety Risk Management (especially in the laboratory sessions).

Alternative Assessment

The alternative assessment for the laboratory reports is a report based on given observation data.

Assessment Strategy

The assessment strategy is centred on three units of assessment:

  1. The coursework tests the ability of the students the analyse, design and detail structural elements of a multi-storey building (Learning outcomes 001, 002, 003, 005)

  2. The laboratory report assesses the ability of the students to analyse data obtained from practical experiments and critically appraise it, and to effectively communicate their findings in a technical report (Learning outcomes 004 and 005)

  3. The end-of-semester examination provides students with the opportunity to demonstrate their understanding of codified design of reinforced concrete and structural steel elements and connections (Learning outcomes 001, 002 and 003).

Where appropriate, tutor support comment and feedback will be given in the tutorial sessions and lectures. Students will receive written feedback on the laboratory reports and their coursework submissions.

  • Introduce basic design philosophies and procedures used in the design of reinforced concrete and steel structural elements
  • Provide students with the ability to design basic reinforced concrete and structural steel elements of a multi-storey building
  • Provide students with the ability to detail reinforced concrete elements and analyse and design steel connections.

Methods of Teaching / Learning

The module is delivered principally by lectures and supported by tutorials and laboratory classes which includes testing of a reinforced concrete beam to failure.

Indicated Lecture Hours (which may also include seminars, tutorials, workshops and other contact time) are approximate and may include in-class tests where one or more of these are an assessment on the module. In-class tests are scheduled/organised separately to taught content and will be published on to student personal timetables, where they apply to taken modules, as soon as they are finalised by central administration. This will usually be after the initial publication of the teaching timetable for the relevant semester.
