Module Overview

The desire to create something remarkable for special occasions is the starting point for event planners and managers. Once an event design has been accepted, creative minds then work closely with service-providers to deliver the concept. This event module explores the role of design in events, introducing an understanding and application of what design is, design principles, design concepts, operational design, theming, staging, and production. Furthermore the module will explore ideas on creativity including developing creative thought, procedures and practices. The module will reflect on design at events as a management tool.

The module aims to teach fundamental skills needed for the development of designs (visual and thematic) for events

Assessment Strategy

The assessment strategy is designed to provide students with the opportunity to demonstrate a detailed and accurate understanding of the design, creativity and the role they play in event creation.

The essay will explore theoretical ideas and approaches to the concept of event design and the Creative Design Solution will enable creativity to be put into practice.

Formative feedback

Students receive feedback throughout the semester via face to face teaching which will support them to complete the assessments.

Methods of Teaching / Learning

The teaching and learning strategy is designed to encourage an understanding of the origins and development of design and creativity; develop a knowledge of the principal areas of event design and creativity and the application of these principles of design in practice. 

The teaching and learning methods include the use of one lectures to illustrate general principles supported by one hour seminars, which will demonstrate the practical application. A range of methods will be  incorporated, such as appropriate video footage, case studies and seminar exercises.

Indicated Lecture Hours (which may also include seminars, tutorials, workshops and other contact time) are approximate and may include in-class tests where one or more of these are an assessment on the module. In-class tests are scheduled/organised separately to taught content and will be published on to student personal timetables, where they apply to taken modules, as soon as they are finalised by central administration. This will usually be after the initial publication of the teaching timetable for the relevant semester.
