This supervisor-directed module introduces students to the literature in their research domain as well as debates, theories, and methodological issues. The focused and directed nature of the module will enable students to acquire a sound understanding of foundational issues, contemporary debates, and an appreciation of unresolved issues, as well as research designs in their research domain. An understanding of these issues should provide students a sound platform to conceptualize a value-added research problem and rigorous research.

The assessment strategy is designed to provide students with the opportunity to demonstrate their learning and achievement of the module's learning outcomes.
Thus, the summative assessment for this unit consists of:
- Term Paper
Students will submit a term paper that provides a comprehensive review of the literature in their research domain. This paper must demonstrate analytical rigour and ability to evaluate the appropriateness of conclusions based on the research design. The paper must not exceed 5,000 words.
An ongoing feature of the module whereby students will be expected to come to each of the sessions having read a specified number of articles and prepared to critically evaluate them.
Feedback will be regularly provided during the sessions.

- Provide students with insight into key theoretical perspectives relevant to their research domain.
- Introduce students to key methodological debates in their research domain.

Methods of Teaching / Learning
The learning and teaching strategy is designed to ensure students achieve the learning outcomes. The nature of the module requires a highly interactive teaching or learning method. Students are expected to attend each of the sessions having read supervised-assigned readings for the session. Supervisors will structure the discussion around specific themes such as the contributions of the assigned articles, appropriateness of the theories used in the article, appropriateness of the research design and conclusions. Students may also be asked to discuss the implications of the assigned articles for their dissertation.
Indicated Lecture Hours (which may also include seminars, tutorials, workshops and other contact time) are approximate and may include in-class tests where one or more of these are an assessment on the module. In-class tests are scheduled/organised separately to taught content and will be published on to student personal timetables, where they apply to taken modules, as soon as they are finalised by central administration. This will usually be after the initial publication of the teaching timetable for the relevant semester.
