Module Overview

On completion of this module learners will gain the knowledge of analytical frameworks to manage the innovation process. Specifically learners will be able to examine the patterns and sources of technological disruption and identify the strategic and organisational challenges involved in managing technological innovation.

Learners will be able to synthesise multiple, often incomplete or contradictory data sources to generate new ideas and innovative ways of working that lead to transformational change within their own organisation. Learners will be comfortable and confident to work autonomously to implement their recommended solutions, generating buy-in and commitment to proposed changes.

Assessment Strategy

The assessment strategy is designed to enable learners to demonstrate their ability to identify the need for change and innovation within their own organisation. Learners will be required to show that they have both the relevant analytical and diagnostic tools to identify inefficiencies and the need for change as well as appropriate tools and methodologies to manage associated recommendations and solutions to successful conclusions.

In addition the assessment strategy will enable learners to prove that they are building up their knowledge and understanding about developments in the market due to opportunities technology and media provides and to become aware of the broad range of existing examples.

Thus, the summative assessment for this module consists of:

Individual report – 90%

Learners will be required to produce a 2,500 word report on the identification and implementation plan of an organisational change, new technology or other innovation that their organisation would benefit from. Learners will need to draw on the latest academic research and industry trends to demonstrate the relevance of their proposed solution.

Individual learning journal 10%

Learners will be required to critically reflect on and evaluate their own learning and how this informs their professional practice within the context of their role as a senior leader within their own organisation. Learners will be required to produce a critical reflection of their own learning through the submission and delivery of a 1,000 page reflective summary note.

Formative assessment

Learners will be required to contribute to moderated discussion forums to demonstrate the development of their knowledge and mastery of the academic research as well as demonstrate awareness of current industry trends.

Feedback

During the first seminar, the assignments and the feedback process is explained Feedback is also provided during and after in-class discussions

As the seminars are built around topic-specific group exercises, learners not only benefit from lecture’s feedback but also receive peer evaluations

A pre-assignment feedback session is an integral part of this module. During this session, learners work in groups on a task which reflects the requirements of the assignments and receive feedback on their work

Once marking is completed, learners are provided with feedback which contains detailed generic feedback as well as a breakdown of marks. This enables learners to assess their own performance compared to their peers.

Learners will also receive written feedback on their final submission within the University’s three week deadline.

Module aims

  • The module will seek to develop a mindset of inquiry and problem solving and to provide learners with appropriate tools to define and evaluate options for operational improvements

Methods of Teaching / Learning

The learning and teaching strategy is designed to provide learners with an overview of the theories covering the key areas of change, innovation and technology at work. This theoretical overview will be supplemented with providing learners with practical project, programme and continuous improvement methodologies so that they can identify, lead, implement and evaluate their change initiatives.

The module will focus on providing learners with a combination of the necessary conceptual knowledge and practical skills to lead and manage change within their own organisation.

The learning and teaching methods include:


  • theoretical lectures with supporting materials from a range of perspectives within technology and media in tourism, hospitality and events to provide learners with a holistic framework of knowledge

  • in-class exercises, practical examples and topical case studies to critically discuss and apply theoretical knowledge to the real world

  • critical discussions about the relevance of theory for interface design and interface evaluation respectively

  • project in which learners first contribute to the evaluation of a selected technological interface

  • provide learners with the opportunity to present findings from the project and to discuss these in appropriate forums

  • supporting guest lecture session

  • data analysis coaching session

  • formative feedback sessions
