PUBLIC PERFORMANCE 2 - COLLABORATIVE ENSEMBLE - 2020/1

In light of the Covid-19 pandemic, and in a departure from previous academic years and previously published information, the University has had to change the delivery (and in some cases the content) of its programmes, together with certain University services and facilities for the academic year 2020/21.

Students will be cast and directed in a Collaborative Ensemble Performance Piece selected by GSA. This piece will be rehearsed and performed by an Ensemble comprising of both MFA Actors and MFA Musical Theatre students. The selection of the Performance Piece will be determined by the skills and dynamics available in both student groups. There will be four or five weeks of full-time rehearsals followed by a performance week of dress rehearsals and four or five public performances. The Collaborative Ensemble Performance Piece will be supported by a Director/Movement Director and a Musical Director who will give continuous feedback on student progress throughout the course of rehearsals. Directors and production staff are selected from members of the faculty, the production courses and from a pool of professional working directors and technicians

Indicative content includes:
Approximately four weeks of intensive rehearsal with the Director/Movement Director and a Musical Director, together with consultation with design, wardrobe, make-up and marketing departments. This is followed by a production week that will include a demanding and lengthy technical rehearsal and two dress rehearsals. The module will culminate with at least four public performances.

The assessment strategy is designed to provide students with the opportunity to demonstrate a sophisticated understanding of style and genre, knowledge of a range of practices and performance styles, effective collaborative strategies in rehearsal and performance, discipline and a consistent approach to work in a professional context.
Thus, the summative assessment for this module consists of:
Performance – 70%. Teaching Block 1
Practical assessment of student’s performance in the public production
Process – 30%. Teaching Block 1
Practical Assessment of the student’s contribution to the process Formative feedback Notes will be given the Director/Movement Director and Musical Director, and other members of the creative team will provide feedback where appropriate.
- To consolidate the skills learned in Public Performance MUTM033, and throughout training, by creating and performing a character as cast in a professional-standard public production, incorporating integrated acting, voice and movement
- To contribute appropriately to ensemble practice in a professional environment
- To manage personal engagement in an environment which, as nearly as possible, follows the professional model with professional directors, movement directors, musical directors, designers and other creatives
- To sustain and develop a working performance technique throughout the demands of a series of public performances

The learning and teaching strategy is designed to:
Help the student learn to negotiate a process of engagement with full production values and staff, comprising costume and make-up supervisors set and lighting designers and a full professional structure of stage management and technicians.

Indicated Lecture Hours (which may also include seminars, tutorials, workshops and other contact time) are approximate and may include in-class tests where one or more of these are an assessment on the module. In-class tests are scheduled/organised separately to taught content and will be published on to student personal timetables, where they apply to taken modules, as soon as they are finalised by central administration. This will usually be after the initial publication of the teaching timetable for the relevant semester.
