Within this module students will develop their facilitative communication skills, including the use of empathy, handling strong emotion and anger and will receive individual and group feedback on skill development.

The assessment strategy is designed to provide students with the opportunity to demonstrate how they are developing their facilitative communication skills in practice through making links between theory and practice and to reflect on skill development.
Thus, the summative assessment for this module consists of:
Audio-recording of an interaction with a patient or staff member and a written critical reflection on the use of communication skills during the interaction.
A reflection on the use of facilitative communication skills during an interaction with a patient, client, family or staff member including discussion of the barriers to communication.
2,500 words (100% of the module marks)
The student will take part in experiential learning related to communication skills and will be supported to reflect on skill development and identify learning points from experiential work.
Feedback on communication skills will be given through experiential exercises which enables students to identify their skill development by linking theory with practice. Formative feedback will also be provided on the transcript of the audio recording.
Please note that any evidence of unsafe practice or breach of confidentiality will result in an automatic refer for the module.

Delivery of Module:
Experiential learning, small group work, lecture and discussion.
