ANAESTHETIC PRACTITIONER PART 2 - 2021/2
Module code: HCRM018
Module Overview
This module has been developed in order to facilitate the further development of knowledge, skills and underlying principles of safe and effective anaesthetic practice. It is designed to be inter-professional and is directed at practitioners working in the operating theatre participating in anaesthetic care. It enables them to develop the knowledge of pharmacological principles underlying the use of medicines in anaesthetic practice for a range of patient groups. Module content is selected and designed to meet the knowledge and skills required to practice anaesthetic care across a broad range of surgical specialties.

Assessment Strategy
The assessment strategy is designed to provide students with the opportunity to demonstrate their knowledge skills and practice on the equipment, techniques and drugs used in anaesthesia so as to be able to act as an anaesthetic practitioner in a range of patient group settings.
Thus, the summative assessment for this module consists of two components
A practice portfolio and an essay
Formative assessment and feedback
Students will receive formative feedback via:
· Single and/or small group tutorials where they will present a plan for their assignment and review a small section of draft work
· Verbal discussion during contact time
Timely response to email or telephone questions
Module aims
- This module aims to develop safe, competent and confident anaesthetic practitioners who can underpin their practice, in a range of clinical settings caring for clients across the lifespan with appropriate evidence
Learning outcomes
Attributes Developed | ||
1 | Critically analyse the anatomical and physiological measurements associated with patients undergoing anaesthesia and evaluate the outcomes | KCPT |
2 | Explore and critically examine the pharmacokinetics of peri-anaesthesia drugs | KCPT |
3 | Critically analyse and evaluate the medico legal and ethical dimensions associated with safe anaesthetic care | KCPT |
4 | Initiate, manage and evaluate the research based care of the child/adult requiring anaesthesia, taking into account issues that are multifactorial to develop an achievable action plan | KCPT |
5 | Critically evaluate the issues of accountability, responsibility and role limitations within professional boundaries for the anaesthetic practitioner and future anaesthetic practice | KCPT |

Methods of Teaching / Learning
The learning and teaching strategy is designed to:
Enable students to have a deep and systematic understanding of anaesthetic practice
Anaesthesia and patient safety within an organisational context
To draw upon their own experience to develop their understanding of the current evidence base for anaesthetic practitioner practice
The learning and teaching methods include:
Lectures
Workshops
Scenarios
On line tutorials
E learning
Indicated Lecture Hours (which may also include seminars, tutorials, workshops and other contact time) are approximate and may include in-class tests where one or more of these are an assessment on the module. In-class tests are scheduled/organised separately to taught content and will be published on to student personal timetables, where they apply to taken modules, as soon as they are finalised by central administration. This will usually be after the initial publication of the teaching timetable for the relevant semester.
