Assessment Strategy
The assessment strategy is designed to provide students with the opportunity to demonstrate:
- The practical reports will assess Learning Outcomes 1-4
- The final exam will assess Learning Outcomes 1-4
Thus, the summative assessment for this module consists of:
- Practical reports (2 x15% weighting); deadline 2 weeks after practical
- Final exam (70% weighting), which is MCQ-type questions (1.5 hrs; 90 questions)
Formative assessment and feedback
- Feed-forward advice on laboratory reports
- Feedback on practical reports
- Pre-exam tutorial
- MCQ questions on SurreyLearn
- Use of “think-pair-share” and “Elevator” exercise during lectures
Module aims
- Provide an overview of analytical techniques used in research and clinical laboratories
- Link taught topics to laboratory practicals
- Use a blended learning approach to the teaching of Analytical Biochemistry by incorporating lectures, concept-directed tasks and tutorials
- Develop a critical awareness of analytical techniques and the analysis/interpretation of data

Methods of Teaching / Learning
The learning and teaching strategy is designed to:
• Develop critical thinking and analysis skills, related to the module content;
• Encourage discussion and participation in learning activities, related to the module content;
• Encourage independent learning.
The learning and teaching methods include:
• Lectures (4 hrs x10 weeks)
• Pre-exam Tutorials
• Practicals (2 hrs x 2 weeks)
• “Think - pair - share” class exercises
• “Elevator” class exercises
• SurreyLearn Discussion forum
• SurreyLearn on-line tests (MCQ)
Indicated Lecture Hours (which may also include seminars, tutorials, workshops and other contact time) are approximate and may include in-class tests where one or more of these are an assessment on the module. In-class tests are scheduled/organised separately to taught content and will be published on to student personal timetables, where they apply to taken modules, as soon as they are finalised by central administration. This will usually be after the initial publication of the teaching timetable for the relevant semester.
