Module Overview

This module forms a one of the major components of Level 6 and will involve the student taking a leading role in a creative production and also contributing to other productions being made by other students.

Students can pitch their production ideas and the best ideas selected by students and staff are then produced to form the creative productions.  Examples of types of productions include: a drama, factual film, television program or animation.  Students can work in groups to produce a professional quality media production but there is also the possibility to complete an individual media piece.  

Students will work in professional roles that you would find in a film production or TV production including the production development, planning, cinematography, sound recording, lighting, post production sound, editing, colour grading, visual effects or animation.
Students will present their production plans, achievements and developments in semester 1.
Students will document their progress throughout the year in a journal or blog.

Module content

The content of the creative production will be agreed between the students and the teaching staff during Semester 1.
Students will agree their leading creative project role details as well as their operational roles for other projects.
Group and individual tutorials will be given throughout the year.
Students will maintain a continuous journal or blog record of the project development, plus a final reflective report.
The completed projects will be mastered and delivered to industry standards.

Alternative Assessment

The creative project may be replaced with documentation of process and a written assignment.

Assessment Strategy

The assessment strategy is designed to provide students with the opportunity to demonstrate excellence in film and TV production skills, as well as strong oral and written communication:
Thus, the summative assessment for this module consists of:


  1. Presentation (15%): outline of production development so far, examples of craft skills and future plans

  2. Creative production (85%): consists of three elements:-



a) A leading role in a production to be agreed in semester 1.
b) Assisting or crewing roles in agreed productions.
c) A continuous documentation of the process.

Note: in accordance with the University’s code of practice for assessment and feedback, the large scale project in this module will be double-blind marked by two independent markers.

Marks will be compared and a decision made as to the final mark in accordance with the published code of practice.


Formative assessment will be given in the form of regular individual and group tutorials, plus a formative submission of the creative project.

Students will receive regular tutorial feedback on their production and their individual contribution to all their productions

Module aims

  • Provide students with the experience of taking a leading role in a creative production relevant to the Film or TV industry.
  • Provide an opportunity to create a professional media production through knowledge of pre-production work, production skills, operational skills or post production expertise.
  • To enable the students to produce a screen based creative production demonstrating a high standard of intellectual and practical skills.
  • To provide opportunities for students to produce a comprehensive oral presentation, keep a journal and reflect on personal achievements through the completion of the creative work.

Methods of Teaching / Learning

The learning and teaching strategy is designed to: develop production skills  and knowledge in styles of film production and television broadcasting. It will also provide opportunities for creative development and production evaluation. Some two-hour plenary session at the beginning of the semester will remind students of professional filming procedures, production techniques and craft skills and any other skills required for the productions chosen.

Students will give a presentation on their production role, achievements and future plans.

There will be regular tutorials for individuals on their creative journey and production groups to guide and support the creative productions

In-class tests are scheduled/organised separately to taught content and will be published on to student personal timetables, where they apply to taken modules, as soon as they are finalised by central administration. This will usually be after the initial publication of the teaching timetable for the relevant semester.
