LEGAL AND RISK ISSUES IN EVENTS MANAGEMENT - 2022/3

In light of the Covid-19 pandemic the University has revised its courses to incorporate the ‘Hybrid Learning Experience’ in a departure from previous academic years and previously published information. Staging events within a modern regulated society requires event organisers to have a good awareness of legal considerations as regards keys areas of law; these include aspects of criminal and civil law, common law (the tort of negligence and contract law), licensing and official ‘guidance’ documentation. Event Management also requires the identification and assessment of all forms of risk, especially those specific to do with employee and public safety. Such legal requirements and the inherent risks within the promotion of events, necessitates that event managers develop a strong understanding of competencies across all aspects of an events delivery and the requirements within their organisations and workforces to meet such demands
This module therefore aims to provide students with an understanding of the key legal frameworks within which the planning and management of events takes place. Students will undertake practical activities in relation to the following: licensing, health and safety requirements for both staff and visitors and the assessment of risk. This module includes attendance on a relevant spectator or safety course (this can be in advance or during the early part of the module)

The assessment strategy is designed to provide students with the opportunity to demonstrate a comprehensive and accurate understanding of the legal; and safety framework for events.
Thus, the summative assessment for this module consists of:
• Assessment 1 consists of a report on the legal framework surrounding an event
• Assessment 2 for this module consists of a closed-book examination of multiple choice questions to be held at the end of the semester.
• Ongoing group work case study analysis and discussions and verbal feedback within weekly seminars
Formal written feedback provided for the CW1 report
- Identify and understand relevant legislation and common law frameworks as they affect the staging and management of events within the UK
- Explain the nature of risk, risk analysis, management and assessment
- Provide knowledge on competency within the management of events, staff and event visitors

Methods of Teaching / Learning
The learning and teaching strategy is designed to:
- encourage students to respond to formal presentations but also take responsibility for their own learning by combining lecture presentations with self-directed learning based around the core text and supporting material on SurreyLearn.
The learning and teaching methods include:
lectures, visiting industry speaker, directed reading and case studies followed by discussions on Surrey Learn. A two hour lecture is scheduled every week for 11 weeks, plus a one hour seminar session. Essential independent learning is included with attendance on the ESP and IPC preparation
Indicated Lecture Hours (which may also include seminars, tutorials, workshops and other contact time) are approximate and may include in-class tests where one or more of these are an assessment on the module. In-class tests are scheduled/organised separately to taught content and will be published on to student personal timetables, where they apply to taken modules, as soon as they are finalised by central administration. This will usually be after the initial publication of the teaching timetable for the relevant semester.
