In light of the Covid-19 pandemic the University has revised its courses to incorporate the ‘Hybrid Learning Experience’ in a departure from previous academic years and previously published information. We have updated key module information regarding the pattern of assessment and overall student workload to inform student module choices. We are currently working on bringing remaining published information up to date to reflect current practice in time for the start of the academic year 2021/22.

Increasing numbers of event professionals have a personal interest in reducing the environmental impact of their events. Although they increasingly view ‘green issues’ as adding value to their brand, they often fear that it will add additional expense and time.This module takes a proactive view of those concerns, based on the principle of ‘why event managers cannot afford to ignore sustainability as a business imperative’.
At the outset event managers need to know what impact their event is already having on the environment, and this important analysis forms the underpinning rationale for the module. From here, through the the lens of sustainable event design and experience, we will then critically discuss how sustainable practices can be developed, culminating in a review of sustainability management systems that reflect different approaches to problem solving environmental impact.

Indicative content includes:
Identifying environmental risks/opportunities from a business perspective
Sustainability and experiences: Designing, staging and managing sustainable experiences for stakeholders
Staging and managing sustainable experiences: e.g consumption management and control: energy, water, land use, food sources, materials etc; production/waste management and control: noise, bio-hazard waste, waste disposal facilities etc.
Sustainable business models and technologies
Social and environmental issues: employee motivation, improve retention, enhance reputation, strengthen relationships with key clients, suppliers, partners and other external stakeholders who hold similar values
Reducing carbon emissions over the entire event supply chain
Strengthening the position of the organisation within the community
Analysing how to establish, implement, maintain and improve an event sustainability management system;

The assessment strategy is designed to provide students with the opportunity to demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of wide range of dimensions in event sustainability design and management as well as the possible green impacts events creates via their sustainable practices.
Thus, the summative assessment for this module consists of:
- Assignment 1- individual report, max 1500 words (addressing LO 1,2,4 ) In this report, students need to analyse the sustainable practices in one identified event, with regards to the various dimensions of event sustainability design and production. Students also need to demonstrate in-depth understanding of how to evaluate the green impacts of the sustainable practices studied.
- Assignment 2- Green event handbook, group work, max 15 A4 posters in the handbook (addressing LO 1,2,3,4) In this group work, students in a group need to identify an event, act as a consultancy team and provide a Green event handbook detailing proposals for this event in how the event can apply event sustainable practices and what they are exactly via a poster handbook format.
Students will be given tasks to practice on during lectures and seminars which support their overall learning and their summative assessments.
Students will receive feedback on their performance during the module in the form of written and verbal feedback in workshops to inform the summative assessments.

Methods of Teaching / Learning
The learning and teaching strategy is designed to: Provide a framework of contemporary knowledge and theories supported by examples from industry. Current issues, debates and case studies will be introduced and key issues highlighted so that the students are able to apply critical thinking to the literature and case studies.
The learning and teaching methods include:A series of lectures and seminars, appropriate case studies and guest lectures. The syllabus presented in the module documents will be covered using a variety of teaching and learning methods. Methods used may include academic lectures, lectures by industry guests, seminars and group work, peer to peer learning and academic-supported self-study and directed reading. Students should be prepared for assessment on topics from across the syllabus - irrespective of the mode of delivery e.g. whether the topic was covered by a formal lecture, seminar, group work, peer to peer learning, self-directed study tasks and directed reading, etc. Students may also undertake ‘site walks’ where they will get to visually inspect an event venue or location to analyse the potential sustainable practice it employs.
To be specific, there will be 3 hours x 11 weeks of blended learning—lectures and seminars; and 117 hours of guided independent learning.
Indicated Lecture Hours (which may also include seminars, tutorials, workshops and other contact time) are approximate and may include in-class tests where one or more of these are an assessment on the module. In-class tests are scheduled/organised separately to taught content and will be published on to student personal timetables, where they apply to taken modules, as soon as they are finalised by central administration. This will usually be after the initial publication of the teaching timetable for the relevant semester.
