Module Overview

This module introduces students to the fundamentals of effective management of academic careers. It adopts a problem-solving orientation which should enable students to acquire a sound understanding of the competencies needed to optimize their chances of publishing high quality research. In addition they will acquire practical knowledge about the research and publication process which will be supplemented with insights from SBS academics with a wealth of experience of the realities of this process.

  • Formulating a value-added research problem

  • Doing a literature review

  • Preparing a manuscript for journal submission

  • Successfully integrating theories

  • Doing a developmental/constructive review

  • Managing the revise and resubmit process

  • The role of the editor in the review process

  • Managing academic careers and developing a programme of research

Assessment Strategy

The assessment strategy is designed to provide students with the opportunity to demonstrate their mastery of the module content

 

Formative assessment

 

Students will be required to actively participate in class discussions and prepare for these discussions by reading assigned journal articles. Students can expect to receive feedback on their in-class discussion and activities.

 

The summative assessment for this unit consists of:

 

Assessment 1: Individual essay

 

Students will write and submit an individual essay of 4,000 words.

Students can expect to receive feedback on their in-class discussion and activities, as well as written feedback on their summative assignment.

  • Develop students' appreciation of some of the processes involved in the publication of high quality research in academic journals.
  • Develop students' understanding of the competencies needed to optimize their chances of publishing high quality research.
  • Develop students' appreciation of the competencies needed to craft high quality research grant applications.

Methods of Teaching / Learning

The learning and teaching strategy is designed to be highly interactive and to provide a collegial environment for experience sharing. A seminar style presentation format will be adopted and students will be expected to read and discuss assigned journal articles.

 

The learning and teaching methods include:

 

Seminar-based classroom discussions.

Indicated Lecture Hours (which may also include seminars, tutorials, workshops and other contact time) are approximate and may include in-class tests where one or more of these are an assessment on the module. In-class tests are scheduled/organised separately to taught content and will be published on to student personal timetables, where they apply to taken modules, as soon as they are finalised by central administration. This will usually be after the initial publication of the teaching timetable for the relevant semester.
