In light of the Covid-19 pandemic the University has revised its courses to incorporate the ‘Hybrid Learning Experience’ in a departure from previous academic years and previously published information. The University has changed the delivery (and in some cases the content) of its programmes. The purpose of this module is to provide you with the opportunity to develop a further degree of independence in the conception, design, and fulfilment of a musicological, compositional, or performance project.

Dissertation: none Composition: Composition 2A or 2B with a mark of at least 60%, or permission from Module Leader. Performance: Performance 2A or 2B with a mark of at least 60%, or permission from Module Leader.
Indicative content includes:
- An initial plenary session in which the purpose of the module will be outlined and advice given on planning and suitable topics.
- An initial tutorial with the module leader to determine your topic and supervisor.
- Presentations and discussions of aspects of your work in group tutorials with students undertaking cognate topics.
- Tutorials with your supervisor.

The assessment strategy is designed to provide students with the opportunity to demonstrate
your independence in the planning, research, and fulfilment of a large-scale individual project; your ability to identify a topic/compositional technique/performance repertoire suitable for treatment in a project of this scope; your ability to identify and critique relevant secondary literature; and your knowledge/understanding of your chosen topic/technique/repertoire.
Thus, the summative assessment for this module consists of the following options:
12,000-word musicological essay
Composition project including a portfolio of compositions of approximately 20-25 minutes duration and a 5,000-word essay
Performance project including a performance of approximately 20-25 minutes duration and a 5,000-word essay
• Non-assessed presentations or performances; essay plan.
• Verbal feedback on your progress will be supplied in these sessions and during one-to-one tutorials during the year.
• You will also receive written feedback from your supervisor in the form of annotations on your drafts or comments on non-assessed performances.
- To enable you to engage with issues in musicology, composition, or performance your own choosing at a level of detail not otherwise offered on the programme;
- To foster an ability to structure an extended piece of writing.

Methods of Teaching / Learning
The learning and teaching strategy is designed to:
Develop a high degree of independence in the planning, research, and fulfilment of an large-scale individual project.
The learning and teaching methods include:
- A plenary session outlining the aims and methods of the module and the range of topics available. (1 hour lecture)
- Groups tutorials (3 x 1 hour sessions)
- Tutorials (10 x 30 minute sessions)
- Individual study (441 hours total)
Indicated Lecture Hours (which may also include seminars, tutorials, workshops and other contact time) are approximate and may include in-class tests where one or more of these are an assessment on the module. In-class tests are scheduled/organised separately to taught content and will be published on to student personal timetables, where they apply to taken modules, as soon as they are finalised by central administration. This will usually be after the initial publication of the teaching timetable for the relevant semester.
