In light of the Covid-19 pandemic the University has revised its courses to incorporate the ‘Hybrid Learning Experience’ in a departure from previous academic years and previously published information. The University has changed the delivery (and in some cases the content) of its programmes. We have updated key module information regarding the pattern of assessment and overall student workload to inform student module choices. We are currently working on bringing remaining published information up to date to reflect current practice in time for the start of the academic year 2021/22.
This means that some information within the programme and module catalogue will be subject to change. Current students are invited to contact their Programme Leader or Academic Hive with any questions relating to the information available.
You will be required to attend rehearsals and concerts as agreed with the Head of Performance, and will be expected to play a full part in the musical life of the Department.
In addition to your assessed performance you will be required to perform a significant solo or small ensemble item in a major Department concert (eg Wednesday lunchtime concert) on an unassessed basis. You should do this at least twice during the module.
The assessment will take place in a public concert.

The assessment strategy is designed to provide students with the opportunity to demonstrate the development of technical, interpretative and performance skills moving closer to a professional standard and to enable them to undertake informed reflection on aspects of performance.
Thus, the summative assessment for this module consists of:
• A 15-minute solo recital on their main instrument given in public
• A 1000 word account (reflective or critical in nature) on a topic arising from their performance activity during the semester
• Lunchtime concerts
• Evening concerts with Departmental ensembles and student ensembles
• From relevant performance staff after concerts
• From instrumental tutors
• Detailed written feedback is given after the formative assessment detailing strengths and areas for improvement.
- To enable you to develop your skills as a performer, technically and musically.
- To enable you to develop stamina in preparation, rehearsal and performance.
- To develop your self-confidence and assurance in presenting musical performances in front of an audience.
- To develop skills in the learning of unfamiliar repertoire, and you will be strongly encouraged to develop your repertoire interests beyond the conventional.

The learning and teaching strategy is designed to:

Indicated Lecture Hours (which may also include seminars, tutorials, workshops and other contact time) are approximate and may include in-class tests where one or more of these are an assessment on the module. In-class tests are scheduled/organised separately to taught content and will be published on to student personal timetables, where they apply to taken modules, as soon as they are finalised by central administration. This will usually be after the initial publication of the teaching timetable for the relevant semester.
