In light of the Covid-19 pandemic the University has revised its courses to incorporate the ‘Hybrid Learning Experience’ in a departure from previous academic years and previously published information. We have updated key module information regarding the pattern of assessment and overall student workload to inform student module choices. We are currently working on bringing remaining published information up to date to reflect current practice in time for the start of the academic year 2021/22.

This module will enable Specialist Community Public Health Nurses who have successfully completed a programme in public health and are currently registed as either a health visitor or school nurse, to apply their knowledge and skills to an additional field of practice. In accordance with NMC circular 26/2006 on successful completion the SCPHN would be equipped to work in the additional field of practice.

This is a practice only module, the student will set learning agreements with their Practice Teacher and receive regular feedback on their progress in achieving competency in the SCPHN domains.

The assessment strategy is designed to provide students with the opportunity to demonstrate critical analysis of evidence based theory with the acquisition of practice skills in the new field.
In the portfolio, students will identify the strengths, challenges, opportunities and barriers (SCOB) to their learning at two key points in their learning journey. This will enable them to set their learning objectives, agree a plan for achieving them with their Practice Teacher and evaluate their progress
The summative assessment for this module consists of 2 parts:
1. The student will submit a reflective account which demonstrates their ability to systematically analyse need and engage with families and professionals in the additional field of practice. The student will self evaluate their progress and identify their future development needs. The student will critically appraise two specific practice experiences to evidence how they have achieved competency in all four domains of practice
2. A Portfolio of evidence which includes
• A log of practice hours
• Achievement of all domains of practice at a competent level
• Teaching plan, delivery and evaluation by student and Practice Teacher
• 2x SCOB analysis
o Learning agreements and evaluation of them
o Public health experience notes
o Confirmation of achievement of additional field competencies signed by Practice Teacher
Formative assessment and feedback
Student progress will be reviewed at tripartite meetings in practice between the student, Practice Teacher and University Specialist Practice Teacher. Each student will receive a minimum of 2 visits at strategic points in the module. Students will develop their portfolio of evidence and complete a SCOB and reflection of their progress to be discussed at each visit. Practice Teachers will review the student’s practice on a regular basis and raise any concerns with the student and their tutor at an early stage.

Methods of Teaching / Learning
The learning and teaching strategy is designed to:
Enable the student to gain an insight into an additional field of SCPHN practice and transfer their knowledge and skills so that they have a good overview of the needs of families and children in the full 0-19 age range
The learning and teaching methods include:
Observation, participation and demonstration of skills, professional conversation and reflection, clinical supervision, contribution to inter-professional forums in practice
Indicated Lecture Hours (which may also include seminars, tutorials, workshops and other contact time) are approximate and may include in-class tests where one or more of these are an assessment on the module. In-class tests are scheduled/organised separately to taught content and will be published on to student personal timetables, where they apply to taken modules, as soon as they are finalised by central administration. This will usually be after the initial publication of the teaching timetable for the relevant semester.

NMC requirements 50 days @7.5 hours gained over a minimum of 10 weeks. This module is practice only and will require students to pass the portfolio and assignment If there is either evidence of unsafe practice or any breach of confidentiality, it will result in an automatic referral for the assessment of this module
