Educational aims of the programme
- Develop confident, competent and responsive autonomous and accountable practitioners with the knowledge, skills and behaviours required to deliver and lead high quality evidence-based midwifery care across a range of healthcare environments. Enable students to act with professional integrity and demonstrate achievement of the professional standards as defined by the NMC Standards for pre-registration midwifery (NMC, 2019a), and to practice within The Code (NMC, 2018) as well as the outcomes presented by the UNICEF Baby Friendly Initiative.
- Prepare and develop students to deliver safe and compassionate evidence-based, person centred care; whilst demonstrating the values and attitudes in keeping with non-discriminatory practice and an orientation towards holistic care who are respectful and enable human rights of women and infants and who ensure that care focuses on the needs, preferences and decisions of women and their new-born infant. To facilitate partnership working with health and social care professionals, service users, carers and families, acknowledging the contribution of a collaborative approach to care and the importance of education for health.
- To deliver a programme rooted in normality whilst preparing midwives to care for all women including those with complex medical, obstetric and social needs; enabling the graduate midwife to fulfil the lead practitioner role, to be the first point of contact for women, to promote and enhance the management of normal births and to coordinate and provide care in high risk and complex pregnancies and along the whole of the maternity pathway, from pre-pregnancy, pregnancy, labour and birth, postpartum and early weeks of new-born infants¿ life.
- Enable students to become flexible, self-directed leaders who can adapt to rapid change in health systems and contexts, and to develop their own knowledge and skills. This will enable them to continue developing as accountable practitioners, utilising research to inform clinical governance and practice outcomes but also increase midwifery knowledge and advance the profession through audit, research and education.

This Bachelor's Degree (Honours) programme is studied full-time over three academic years, consisting of 360 credits (120 credits at FHEQ levels 4, 5 and 6).
Possible exit awards include:
- Bachelor's Degree (Ordinary) (300 credits)
- Diploma of Higher Education (240 credits)
- Certificate of Higher Education (120 credits)
Parts of this programme may be studied outside of the standard University structure and may be subject to professional body requirements.
For students to progress they must achieve a minimum average of 40% and have completed all 120 credits at FHEQ levels 4, 5 and 6. Medicines calculations must be passed with a score of 100% (NMC, 2019a).
On successful completion of the BSc (Hons) Midwifery students may apply for registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council as a Registered Midwife
Programme Adjustments (if applicable)
In accordance with the NMC (2019) Standards for Pre-Registration Midwifery, the programme must be no less than 3 years in length and 4600 hours and provide an equal balance of 50 percent theory and 50 per cent practice learning, using a range of learning and teaching strategies.
