Module Overview

Expected prior learning:  None.

Module purpose:  Working individually or in groups on engineering projects requires a wide range of professional and technical skills. This module helps first year students develop skills in research and technical presentation, along with the practical laboratory skills required by the professional engineer.  Both units of assessment must be passed individually.  No compensation is allowed for this module.

This module is the first module a student will encounter within the Laboratory, Design and Professional Studies group of modules in Year 1 (EEE1027 in semester 1 and EEE1028 in semester 2), in Year 2 (EEE2036 in semester 1 and EEE2037 in semester 2) and EEE3035 in year 3.

Assessment Strategy

The assessment strategy for this module is designed to provide students with the opportunity to demonstrate the following:

·         a basic knowledge of electronic equipment, including the tools needed for assembly of circuits, and the electronic instruments needed to test and make measurements.

·         a good capability of preparing and delivering an oral presentation into a general audience on a research topic.

 

Thus, the summative assessment for this module consists of the following.


  •        Assessment of their practical skills via supervised lab sessions.

  •        Assessment of their research and presentation skills.



 

Formative assessment and feedback

For the module, students will receive formative assessment/feedback in the following ways.

·         During lab sessions, by question and answer sessions and discussions with the demonstrators and staff present

·         During meetings with the academic staff and other contributors

·         Via the marking of coursework

Module aims

  • To give the students a firm grounding in the principles and practices of engineering with particular emphasis on the design, construction and testing of electrical circuits.
  • To allow the student to obtain some of the transferable skills that all professional engineers need to possess through working on technical projects and presentation skills in inclusive engineering.
  • Provide the opportunity required for professional accreditation for all Year 1 students to gain the practical experience that will lead to basic competency in laboratory practice.
  • Reinforce electronics lecture material so that students experience for themselves the relationship between theory and practice.
  • Develop a range of professional skills, such as data research and analysis, written and oral presentation skills, all required to work in technical project environments.
  • The module also aims to provide opportunities for students to learn about the Surrey Pillars listed below.

Methods of Teaching / Learning

The learning and teaching strategy is designed to achieve the following aims:


  • Provide opportunities for students to demonstrate their laboratory skills in the use of basic electronic equipment, including tools needed for assembly of circuits, and electronic instruments needed to test and make measurements through supervised laboratory work;

  • Provide opportunities for students to develop as professional engineers via researching into a topic in inclusive engineering.  



 

Learning and teaching methods include the following:


  • Lectures and associated lab experimental work to aid the student in the preparation of the lab experimental work and to demonstrate their laboratory skills

  • Videos covering material the students will encounter during the lab experimental work to improve their knowledge and familiarisation with these topics (e.g. toolkit, breadboards, stripboards, power supplied, DMM, oscilloscopes and soldering)

  • Professional skills activities in support of a research-based project in inclusive engineering via a verbal presentation.


Indicated Lecture Hours (which may also include seminars, tutorials, workshops and other contact time) are approximate and may include in-class tests where one or more of these are an assessment on the module. In-class tests are scheduled/organised separately to taught content and will be published on to student personal timetables, where they apply to taken modules, as soon as they are finalised by central administration. This will usually be after the initial publication of the teaching timetable for the relevant semester.

Other information

Digital capabilities: Students will gain proficiency in the use of electronic equipment and writing up their reports associated with the individual experiments. Students will gain experience in a data search assignment and presentation skills.

Employability: This module provides the opportunity for students to gain hand-on experience and advanced competency in laboratory practice and to develop essential transferable skills including basic research and presentation skills. This will equip students with important skills spanning both technical and non-technical areas that are essential for an engineer. 

Resourcefulness and resilience: Students will demonstrate their resourcefulness and resilience through the completion of individual experiments including choice of equipment and fault finding. Such activities will improve a student’s planning and risk mitigation strategies.

Global and cultural intelligence: Students will learn to work together with students from different backgrounds to solve problems.  

Sustainability Students will need to consider efficiency in their design of their experiments.
