Wind energy is an emerging renewable technology that has received wide attention in the context of dealing with global energy demand and sustainable development. It is a broad subject encompassing several branches of science and engineering. This module is to introduce the concept, technical approaches, and the practical aspects in applications.

Module content

• Introduction to wind energy: The solar origin of wind, wind Types, Effect of topography, Wind measurements, Wind data analysis, height and the wind, Rotor and power.
• Wind data and statistics: probability density function, Rayleigh distribution, Weibull distribution, Power output profile of wind turbines, Applications.
• Aerodynamics of wind turbine: One-dimensional momentum theory and the Betz Limit, Wake effect, Productivity calculations under Betz limit.
• Airfoils: Terminology, The NACA four-digit, Lift, Drag and Non-dimensional Parameters, The Non -dimensional parameters, Blade Element Theory.
• Blade design: The relative wind direction, Apparent wind, Twist, Blade Shape for Ideal Rotor without wake rotation, Blade Design Procedure.
• Electrical and mechanical aspect of wind turbines: Gears, The generator wind turbine coupling, Wind water pump.
• Offshore wind turbine: Challenges to Wind Power, Offshore and Onshore, The support structure, Offshore wind speed, Charnock model, External design condition, Offshore wind farm site investigation.

Assessment Strategy

The assessment strategy is designed to provide students with the opportunity to demonstrate the gained knowledge and skills in the module.

Thus, the summative assessment for this module consists of:

* Two courseworks of 30% and 10% respectively.

* 2 hour open book examination of 60%.


Formative assessment:

• During each tutorial session in solving practical problems students are given verbal guidance and support;

• After summative assessment of coursework students will receive a written feedback available on SurreyLearn.

Methods of Teaching / Learning

The learning and teaching strategy is designed to:

33 hrs of combined lectures/problem-solving classes, 2 hrs unseen examination, and 115 hrs independent learning.

Total student learning time 150 hours.

The learning and teaching methods include:

  • lectures, tutorials 22 hrs,

  • class discussion and example solving 9 hrs

  • revision 3 hrs

Indicated Lecture Hours (which may also include seminars, tutorials, workshops and other contact time) are approximate and may include in-class tests where one or more of these are an assessment on the module. Other information

This module contains the foundations of wind as a natural phenomenon, wind technology and engineering design, which are central in deploying the ongoing net zero activities and achieving a sustainable society and resilient access to clean energy resources.

This module develops students' skillets, techniques and knowledge in dealing with the wind as an energy source. The student will be capable of using the statistical technique to estimate the wind potential and how to use this information in utilising this energy for electrical and mechanical applications. Therefore, the module will provide students with the basic knowledge essential to act as professional design engineers for wind energy or may the module can build the students’ knowledge to act in wind energy research. In both cases, the student can serve society with the technical expertise required for their prospective roles and responsibilities.
Digital Capabilities

The module improves student skills in using statistical techniques, which are vital in this speciality. In addition to that, the student may need to use large amounts of data in the design of wind systems. Thus, there are many digital capabilities applied in this module, which help students to engage with digital platforms and improve their skills in this area.
