Module Overview

The module will give an opportunity to learn in detail about a specialised area of engineering not normally covered in the remainder of the programme, and to present this to the rest of the year so that fellow students can learn from the findings. The Technical Project is the culmination of the technical component of the programme, and will give an opportunity to conduct research in a subject of the student's choosing to a depth not possible during other parts of the programme.

Module content

The content of the Technical Project will be agreed between the student and the module co-ordinator/project supervisor by the end of Week 8 of Semester 1.

Assessment Strategy

The assessment strategy is designed to provide students with the opportunity to demonstrate research skills, technical writing and presentation skills in the form of a detailed technical project and presentation. Thus, the summative assessment for this module consists of: 


  • Coursework 1  - Technical project. A research-based technical paper on a different topic from that of the student's Literature Review. 90%, 10,000 words, Semester 2. It will cover learning outcomes (1-6).

  • Coursework 2  -  Poster Presentation. The poster presentation will be on the topic of the Technical project. 10%, Semester 2. It will cover learning outcome (7).



Practical and summative assessments are designed to provide students with the opportunity to demonstrate in-depth knowledge of their chosen specialist subject.

Note: in accordance with the University’s code of practice for assessment and feedback, the large-scale project in this module will be double-blind marked by two independent markers.

Marks will be compared and a decision made as to the final mark in accordance with the published code of practice.

 

Formative assessment

There are no formal formative assessment components for this module, but formative feedback will be given to individual students in tutorials during seminar sessions.

 

Feedback

Students receive written feedback on their Technical Project and verbal feedback from tutors and/or fellow students on their presentation. Verbal and/or written feedback is also given through tutorial supervision throughout the year.

Methods of Teaching / Learning

The learning and teaching strategy is designed to foster independent technical and research skills across both semesters. Students will be supported in their independent work through structured guidance in research, technical writing and presentations, as well as one-on-one tutorials. Students will learn from each other's presentations and the subsequent question and answer sessions, delivered during seminars in Semester 2. The learning and teaching methods include:


  • Tutorial supervision of at least ½ hour per fortnight

  • Coursework assignments and feedback


Indicated Lecture Hours (which may also include seminars, tutorials, workshops and other contact time) are approximate and may include in-class tests where one or more of these are an assessment on the module. In-class tests are scheduled/organised separately to taught content and will be published on to student personal timetables, where they apply to taken modules, as soon as they are finalised by central administration. This will usually be after the initial publication of the teaching timetable for the relevant semester.
