Module Overview

The module includes two aspects. The Literature Review is intended to give students experience in writing a literature review on a technical topic, the feedback on which will assist in writing the Technical Project. The Project Progress report will give the student the opportunity to develop a project plan on a different topic to the literature review and also consider possible risks and challenges and how to mitigate them.

Module content

The content of the Literature Review will be agreed between the student and the module co-ordinator at the plenary sessions held during Semester 1. The following topics will be covered in lectures: 


  • Research methods

  • Literature Review

  • Technical writing skills

  • Word processing tools for technical writing

Assessment Strategy

The assessment strategy is designed to provide students with the opportunity to demonstrate research and technical writing skills in the form of a literature review, and a technical project progress report. Thus, the summative assessment for this module consists of:


  • Coursework 1  - Literature Review. Literature Review on a subject of your choosing. The literature review (addresses learning outcomes 1 -5). 60%;

  • Coursework 2  - Project Progress report. The project progress report on the topic of the technical project. This will include motivation of project, research questions and timelines for the project. 40%.



Practical and summative assessment are designed to provide students with the opportunity to demonstrate in-depth knowledge of their chosen specialist subject.

 

Formative assessment

There are no formal formative assessment components for this module, but formative feedback will be given to individual students in tutorials during seminar sessions.

 

Feedback

Students receive written feedback on their Literature Review and Project Progress report. Verbal and/or written feedback may also be given throughout the year.

Methods of Teaching / Learning

The learning and teaching strategy is designed to: foster independent technical and research skills. Students will be supported in their independent work through structured guidance in research and technical writing. The learning and teaching methods include:


  • Five two-hour lectures in Semester 1 

  • Coursework assignments and feedback

  • Tutorial supervision of at least ½ hour per fortnight


Indicated Lecture Hours (which may also include seminars, tutorials, workshops and other contact time) are approximate and may include in-class tests where one or more of these are an assessment on the module. In-class tests are scheduled/organised separately to taught content and will be published on to student personal timetables, where they apply to taken modules, as soon as they are finalised by central administration. This will usually be after the initial publication of the teaching timetable for the relevant semester.
