This module provides students with:
A guide to the employability support available at Surrey.
Support in building CVs and writing cover letters.
Options and information for different paths to improving employability during and after the first year (internships, spring weeks, placement years, graduate schemes, courses and so on).

Assessment Strategy
The assessment strategy is designed to provide students with the opportunity to demonstrate:
Engagement with employability, including identifying one's skills and experience, organizing that information into a form legible to employers, and presenting it in an appropriate way to apply for positions.
Thus, the summative assessment for this module consists of:
A Curriculum Vitae (CV)
A sample cover letter for a representative placement, internship, or graduate position
Students will receive feedback on their CVs and cover letters, and can pursue further advice from the school Employability officer and the Employability and Careers Service.
Formative assessment and feedback
Students will receive verbal feedback during lectures and tutorials through direct questioning. All this feedback will help students to judge their own performance and prepare for the final exam. Feedback on the writing assignment will also help the students to identify any misconceptions. In addition, students will be encouraged to attend student consultation hours of the teaching staff to receive further individual verbal feedback.
Module aims
- (this module aims to:) Introduce students to the concept of employability.
- Guide students towards the support and information available at Surrey (i.e. Pathfinder, the Employability and Careers Service, the placement program).
- Prompt students to begin accumulating experiences and qualifications to improve employability.
- Get students to write a CV and sample cover letter to familiarize them with the process in advance of applying for positions.

Methods of Teaching / Learning
The learning and teaching strategy is (designed to):
Lecture sessions with Q&A will provide students with basic information regarding employment, including: what sorts of opportunities are available and when, how to search for and apply for positions, how to write a CV and cover letter, and how to develop employability skills beyond academic work.
Indicated Lecture Hours (which may also include seminars, tutorials, workshops and other contact time) are approximate and may include in-class tests where one or more of these are an assessment on the module. In-class tests are scheduled/organised separately to taught content and will be published on to student personal timetables, where they apply to taken modules, as soon as they are finalised by central administration. This will usually be after the initial publication of the teaching timetable for the relevant semester.
