PROFESSIONAL REALISATION - 2024/5

Module Overview

This Professional Realisation module is designed to ensure comprehensive understanding of industry level musical theatre skills and how to realise these skills on completion of training. The module consists of two units of assessment:

(1) Industry Showcase: Discussion and selection of musical materials, followed by an intensive rehearsal period and culminating in the performance of an Industry Showcase. Musical materials will be reflective of the continually developing global perspective within the musical theatre industry.

(2) Coursework: A personal critical evaluation of training, and a professional career development plan.

Teaching delivery will be accessible for all students.

In the delivery of this module, GSA is guided by the UN's 17 Sustainable Development goals. We aim to promote good health and well-being by keeping to appropriate working hours and maintaining Equity-standard safe spaces. We encourage positive working ethics: collaboration, kindness, support, understanding, listening and integrity. We aim to recycle and repurpose sets, props and other production resources where possible, promoting a circular economy. Through professional development classes, students will also be guided towards more sustainable and financially viable ways of sustaining their practice post-graduation, encouraging enterprise and entrepreneurship.

Indicative content includes:

• Rehearsal and Performance of Showcase; including discussion, selction and execution of Musical Theatre material

• Compostion of Critical Evaluation Essay and Professional Development Plan

Alternative Assessment

In the event of a student being unable to complete a Performance in Showcase, a resit opportunity will be arranged where they will be required to attend a viva voce and to present practical work to a panel of GSA staff.

Assessment Strategy

The assessment strategy is designed to provide students with the opportunity to demonstrate comprehension and progression of vocal techniques required for a career in musical through continuous classroom and performance assessments.

Formative Assessment and Feedback Formative assessment is crucial to this module. In mirroring industry practice, students are given detailed constant verbal feedback and during classes, which enables students to develop and act upon notes given. Students are encouraged to create a reflective journal which encourages and develops their own reflective practice.

Methods of Teaching / Learning

The learning and teaching strategy is designed to:

Enable the student to demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of a career in Musical Theatre.

The learning and teaching methods include:

• Rehearsal and Performance for Showcase (Teaching Block 3)

• Group and Individual Tutorials (Teaching Block 3)

The module is delivered over 300 hours study across rehearsals and self-study.

Indicated Lecture Hours (which may also include seminars, tutorials, workshops and other contact time) are approximate and may include in-class tests where one or more of these are an assessment on the module. In-class tests are scheduled/organised separately to taught content and will be published on to student personal timetables, where they apply to taken modules, as soon as they are finalised by central administration. This will usually be after the initial publication of the teaching timetable for the relevant semester.
