The module provides opportunities for students to develop and demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the complexities surrounding supporting people living with dementia and their carers. The students will be empowered to play a pro-active role in improving person centred care provision to improve quality of care.

Dementia in context; to include legislation and the historical and political drivers of current policy to drive and influence own field of practice.
The importance of leadership, interdisciplinary and interagency communication and working in relation to dementia care.
Holistic assessments and the assessment of risk in relation to the area of practice.
The impact of abuse on children and young people and their families, including adult survivors of abuse.
Consideration of the impact of attitude and values in dementia care provision
Legal and ethical issues including mental capacity, safeguarding
Specific issues relating to person centred care in practice
Communicating with people living with dementia their families and carers.

Assessment Strategy
The assessment strategy is designed to: The assignment will enable students to explore and analyse strategies and tools that will enhance the quality of care and support provided for people with dementia in the acute care setting. They will demonstrate their knowledge and understanding of the complexities of care provision of people living with dementia and apply the evidence, policy and legislation to their field of practice.
Thus, the summative assessment for this module consists of:
2500 word assignment - Students will critically analyse and critically evaluate the care of people with dementia and the way in which acute services to support their health and social care needs are organised, delivered and managed. Students will be expected to demonstrate knowledge of the key issues in changing practice and critically analyse and evaluate the key issues in the management of dementia. The study will conclude with recommendations for practice. (addressing learning outcomes 1 – 5)
Formative assessment and feedback.
Students will present their study (individually or pairs) recommendations for change(s) in practice to the rest of the group. Students can also send plan of summative assessment for feedback.

- To analyse evidence-based knowledge related to dementia care provision.
- To apply evidence, policy and legislation to the students professional field of practice.
- To develop and demonstrate skills and understanding of the complexities surrounding caring for people living with dementia and be empowered to develop professional capacity in order to play a pro-active role in improving care provision.

Methods of Teaching / Learning
The learning and teaching strategy is designed to:
- apply the current theoretical and methodological approaches to build a sound knowledge base
- utilise interprofessional learning within a non-threatening environment to support the development of individual professional attributes and abilities within the context of shared experiential learning. This allows students to develop capacities required for to improve dementia care provision.
- prepare students to have an inquiring attitude and empower them with an ongoing curiosity regarding new and emerging research and policy that informs their dementia care provision
- equip the students with the skills to build upon previous expertise
- challenge values, beliefs and assumptions in relation to dementia
The learning and teaching methods include:

Indicated Lecture Hours (which may also include seminars, tutorials, workshops and other contact time) are approximate and may include in-class tests where one or more of these are an assessment on the module. In-class tests are scheduled/organised separately to taught content and will be published on to student personal timetables, where they apply to taken modules, as soon as they are finalised by central administration. This will usually be after the initial publication of the teaching timetable for the relevant semester.
