Module Overview

In this compulsory module in the BSc in Media and Communications degree, students will research, investigate and communicate knowledge about the global nature and implications of media and communications. Students will delve into theories and practical case studies around inequalities and diversities within media and communications, cross-media case studies from around the world, global mediated politics, mediated families, mediated childhood and societies. Students will develop significant digital capabilities through both their assignments. Students will be equipped to engage with media and communications scholarship from the global south and to mobilize theoretical lenses from communications studies across diverse national and cultural contexts. Students will use their digital, global and cultural capabilities to synthesize and communicate knowledge to a variety of sectors and stakeholders.

Assessment Strategy

The assessment strategy is designed to allow students to demonstrate that they have met the 4 learning outcomes associated with this module.

 

The assessments offer students the opportunity to demonstrate that they can 1) articulate key global implications of media and communications through oral, audio-visual and written means; 2) that they can

apply relevant theories and concepts from global media and communications to analyze and evaluate contemporary case studies in mediated societies; 3) that they can communicate and present evidence, information and research in confident ways to diverse audiences

 

  Thus, the summative assessment for this module consists of:

 


  • A global media collection (addresses learning outcomes: 1, 2 and 3)

  • A vlog (addresses learning outcomes: 1, 2, 3)



 

Global Media Collection: Students will select and organize information relevant to global media and communications, on a specific topic of their choice from a list of provided topic choices, and provide a critical narrative to explain their selection. The curation of materials needs to be fully contextualized, for example students may collate music, talks, films, trailers, documentaries, performances, news stories, blogs, vlogs, or websites. No matter what the topic, students will need to provide sound reasoning for the choices they make for inclusion and exclusion in their written narrative accompanying the Global Media Collection. Feedback can be sought at various stages of this process.

 

Vlog: The second assignment is a vlog which students will prepare and submit on Surrey Learn using Panopto. Put simply – a vlog – is like a blog – but is done on video. Each student’s vlog built on a set topic chosen from a range of provided topics, tells a powerful, compelling story where the vlog is a student’s own, individual creative endeavour. The vlog must show evidence of module content – theories, concepts, frameworks and cases – being used and applied. The topics provided may be a new development in media and communications, particular global dimensions to a media topics, or a significant emergent new case study. Students will undertake research and compile a video presentation using evidence-based arguments, and ensuring that complex issues are communicated in a way that is accessible. Making presentations time limited means students must distil key information. Feedback can be sought at various stages of this process.

 

Formative assessment and feedback

 

Both assignments are linked to formative submissions in the period before summative submissions. These optional but highly encouraged formative submissions will allow students the opportunity to get informal feedback on their work in preparation for summative assignments. These formative opportunities are associated with seminar activities and sessions preparing students for the summative assignments. In addition, weekly teaching and learning embeds activities which build in numerous moments of formative feedback which are explicitly linked to summative assignment preparation.

Methods of Teaching / Learning

The learning and teaching strategy is designed to equip students with analytical and practical skills with which to research media and communications in a global framework, and to evaluate and present evidence on a range of media subjects across national and cultural contexts. In this module students will engage with methods involving comparative media research, and cases including mediated politics, societies and families. These topics are designed to support students’ journey into understanding the global nature of changing media environments and their unequal manifestations and implications across the world. The module content deals with cutting-edge and contemporary case studies and new foci often emerge as the media landscape evolves.

  • Digital capabilities: In this module, students will focus on the global implications of changing media environments, working with global case studies that alter year on year to reflect the latest in terms of the media environment. Close to all lectures out of the 11 lectures address this pillar. Across the assessments (the Global Media Collection and the Vlog) students will develop specific digital capabilities as they will explore a diverse range of digital tools, enabling them to create visually engaging and professional content to effectively convey key concepts and information in a clear, concise, accessible and visually appealing manner.
  • Global and cultural capabilities: This pillar is foundational to Global Media and Communications. Students will develop their global and cultural capabilities by engaging with global cases, frameworks, inequalities, diversities and build knowledge specifically centring the global South and data justice across diverse communities.
