EXTRAMURAL STUDIES (EMS) - 2024/5

Module Overview

Requirement: 38 weeks in total of EMS

AHEMS (Animal Husbandry EMS): 12 weeks of AHEMS must be completed in the early part of your veterinary programme.

The 12 weeks comprise:




RCVS/School Requirements (mandatory)
School Recommendations (advisory)


1-week companion animal handling
2-weeks companion animal handling


1-week equine animal handling
2-weeks equine handling


1-week farm animal handling
2-weeks farm animal handling (i.e., dairy farm/calving)


2-weeks lambing


The remaining nine weeks can be spent on other species or revisiting one of the above for further experience
The remaining four weeks can be spent on other species or revisiting one of the above for further experience




 

Clinical EMS: 26 weeks starting no sooner than Year 2 summer* and should ideally be completed by Year 5.

4-weeks companion animal veterinary practice


4-weeks equine veterinary practice


4-weeks farm animal veterinary practice


1 week in a Veterinary Pathology and Public Health (VPPH) setting (i.e., diagnostic laboratory, pathology labaratory, abattoir.) Further guidance on booking suitable VPPH placements is available on SurreyLearn.



The remaining 17-weeks can be spent on other species or revisiting one of the above for further experience.  This can also include:

• Up to 6-weeks of research EMS


• Up to 2-weeks of conference/professional EMS

 

*Preparatory Clinical EMS in second-year summer:

Students who wish to do Clinical EMS in the second-year summer are allowed to complete up to 6 weeks of preparatory observational EMS (Prep-Clinical EMS) provided the have completed the mandatory AHEMS requirement. These weeks would count towards the 26-week EMS requirement. 

Recommendation for Prep Clinical EMS is: 2 weeks production animal veterinary practice, 2 weeks companion animal veterinary practice and 2 weeks equine veterinary practice.

Module aims

• To provide opportunities for students to gain valuable hands-on experience and practice skills acquired during the veterinary programme, in a further range of real workplace learning contexts.
• To provide opportunities for students to identify their own intended learning outcomes for EMS and undertake EMS placements in areas which complement and enhance their learning and which they feel will benefit them most.
• For students to gain further experience in the handling and husbandry of production animals, horses and companion animals.
• To provide students with opportunities for overseas EMS
• For students to gain further experience in work-place environments to enhance and further develop their: employability, global and cultural capabilities, digital skills, sustainability capabilities and resourcefulness and resilience.
• For students to fulfil the RCVS AHEMS and EMS requirements

Indicated Lecture Hours (which may also include seminars, tutorials, workshops and other contact time) are approximate and may include in-class tests where one or more of these are an assessment on the module. In-class tests are scheduled/organised separately to taught content and will be published on to student personal timetables, where they apply to taken modules, as soon as they are finalised by central administration. This will usually be after the initial publication of the teaching timetable for the relevant semester.

Extra-mural studies provide additional opportunities for veterinary students to experience in work-place environments the importance of these topics and how they relate to the role of a veterinary surgeon in clinical practice and to further enhance their employability through experiential learning.
