Module Overview

This module provides the opportunity to enhance transferable skills including skills necessary for employment and further study. Specifically, students will learn about the principles of scientific writing/reporting, how to research using scientific databases and how to reference content appropriately. Students will gain skills in Excel to visualise data, graphing and statistical functionality for chemical problems, and develop individual presentation skills.

Indicative content includes:



  • Use of technology for self-study and communication


  • Use of technology to develop research skills


  • Understanding objectives and reporting of research by becoming familiar with how to effectively search scientific databases 


  • Scientific writing, word processing and referencing


  • Becoming familiar with the World of Work by preparation of CV and application letter


  • Assessment Centres and Interviews


  • Spreadsheets, plotting data and functions;


  • Data visualisation for chemical problems, PowerPoint applications and presentation skills

Assessment Strategy

The assessment strategy is designed to provide students with the opportunity to demonstrate that they have successfully achieved the learning outcomes of the module (see above). 

Thus, the summative assessment for this module consists of coursework: 

• Coursework 1 (40 % of the module): Professional Reporting (LOs 1, 3) 

• Coursework 2 (30 % of the module): Professional Presentation (LOs 1, 2) 

• Coursework 3 (15 % of the module): CV (LO 4) 

• Coursework 4 (15 % of the module): Application letter (LO 5) 

 

Formative assessment 



  • Formative assessment is provided for outcomes of practice during workshops. 


  • Feedback is provided orally in each workshop

Methods of Teaching / Learning

The learning and teaching strategy is designed to provide practical support and enhance study skills and employability. The material is delivered in workshops and via captured content. The workshops are interactive, giving the opportunity to try out new technology and become familiar with its effective use. The learning and teaching methods include: role play, group discussions, IT work etc.

Indicated Lecture Hours (which may also include seminars, tutorials, workshops and other contact time) are approximate and may include in-class tests where one or more of these are an assessment on the module. In-class tests are scheduled/organised separately to taught content and will be published on to student personal timetables, where they apply to taken modules, as soon as they are finalised by central administration. This will usually be after the initial publication of the teaching timetable for the relevant semester.

Employability

Students will be supported to develop a unique set of individual, interpersonal and professional skills, which are relevant to chemistry and their career ambitions. These skills will equip students with many of the tools needed to progress, complete their studies and be employment ready.

 

Within the University’s broader education strategy, this module particularly develops students’ Digital Capabilities. Students will significantly enhance their use of word processing software for report and dissertation writing and the use of scientific databases for research and referencing.  

 

The requirement of some significant amount of self-study in the first year of the programme also helps develop students’ Resourcefulness & Resilience.
