Other information
Surrey's Curriculum Framework is committed to developing graduates with strengths in Employability, Digital Capabilities, Global and Cultural Capabilities, Sustainability and Resourcefulness and Resilience. This module is designed to allow students to develop knowledge, skills and capabilities in the following areas: Employability: Alongside acquiring expertise in their chosen research topic, students develop highly transferable project management skills as a result of completing a research project and delivering a presentation in their target languages. Students are required to manage their time effectively and undertake independent research on their topic, followed by analysis and evaluation. Through individual tutorials, students are encouraged to develop learner autonomy and adaptability. The module enables students to develop agile thinking and to communicate complex ideas in both French and Spanish, in a formal, academic register. Global and Cultural Capabilities: Students will be supported in developing their written and oral skills in both their target languages, and to explore a range of topics and sources connecting to both languages, thus furthering their development as skilled linguists with strong cultural awareness. A most innovative aspect of this module, which is addressed to advanced linguists with two Language A levels, is the focus on working across both target languages, which will heighten their intercultural capabilities and represent a rare skill at this level of study. Sustainability: This will be integrated as a working theme in the module provision. Thematic contents will be flexible and student-led to an extent; it is therefore expected that sustainability will be chosen as a topic for individual research project, as is the case in all modules where students choose their own research topics. Resourcefulness and Resilience: This L4, sem. 1 module is intended to provide stretch for advanced linguists, in a highly supportive environment, thus cultivating their resourcefulness and resilience. Students will be allocated a project supervisor, and an effort will be made to connect University study with A level Language syllabi.
