Introduction to Business and Management Education gives an overview of the business school environment and the global educational landscape of business schools in Higher Education. The business school environment includes learning about accrediting and professional bodies, influential educational research relevant to business and management education and the global and cultural differences and perspectives that shape our understanding of our profession, which is relevant in the context of employability.

Assessment Strategy

The assessment strategy is designed to provide students with the opportunity to demonstrate:


  • Knowledge and understanding of business and management education including business landscape, accrediting bodies, external governing bodies, global and cultural contexts and their role of becoming an educator in this field.

  • Personal and professional development and insights gained during the module


Thus, the summative assessment for this module consists of:


  • Individual essay, (80%), 1500 words

The individual essay refers to learning outcomes 1, 2, 3 and 4.

  • Reflective account (5 min, 20%)

The reflective account should be submitted as an audio recording and refers to learning outcome 4 and 5.


Formative assessment

  • As part of teacher training it is paramount that student practice teach, which is a component assessed summatively in module MANM411. There are 2h dedicated to formatively assessing students’ capabilities to teach. This might include the use of digital tools, linking global and cultural concepts as part of their teaching session or facilitating a session on other subjects of their interest.

  • Feedback

  • Feedback will be provided online via the virtual learning environment and face-to-face during personal learning consultations. Feedback will be given to formative and summative assessments.

Module aims

  • Gain a critical understanding of business and management education landscape globally including the purpose and value of accrediting and professional bodies and employment routes.
  • Explore international perspectives and educational research in business and management education in the context of globalisation and culture.
  • Develop reflective and prospective practices including feedback, mindfulness to self and others, self-awareness, resilience, resourcefulness and confidence.

Methods of Teaching / Learning

Teaching formats include:

  • Live online seminars to exchange knowledge and facilitate discussions

  • Practice Teach workshop to increase confidence and self-awareness

  • 121 Coaching sessions to discuss study progress and direction for professional development 

  • Guided learning and captured content on Surreylearn complement the live sessions to deepen understanding.

The learning and teaching methods include:

  • Experiential learning

  • Guest lectures

  • Group discussions

Indicated Lecture Hours (which may also include seminars, tutorials, workshops and other contact time) are approximate and may include in-class tests where one or more of these are an assessment on the module. In-class tests are scheduled/organised separately to taught content and will be published on to student personal timetables, where they apply to taken modules, as soon as they are finalised by central administration. This will usually be after the initial publication of the teaching timetable for the relevant semester.
