Assessment Strategy
The assessment strategy is designed to provide students with the opportunity to demonstrate successful completion of the module learning outcomes.
Thus, the summative assessment for this module consists of:
- An unseen examination.
- Examination: 2.5 hours - 100%
- For this examination, the student is required to address the module learning outcomes in to the modular content.
- The student should demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the outcomes, using relevant primary evidence and literature from a range of academic sources to support arguments. This primary evidence should be discussed critically in relation to assessing and planning care for the client.
- The examination should demonstrate both comprehension and analysis of the scenario / questions and the ability to apply theory to practice.
- The work should be presented neatly and written in an academic style using correct spelling. .
- N.B. If a student recommends care which is unsafe practice; the assessment will be awarded a fail grade.
A reference list to be taken into the midwifery emergency exam and submitted with the exam paper. Ten references only, in the Harvard style of referencing, should be written on one side of A4 paper, using size 12 font.
Formative assessment – discussion of previous examination questions. Students will work in pairs to answer a sample examination paper. In addition, each student is given a named tutor to discuss revision plans / techniques.

Module aims
- The module examines deviations from normal midwifery care, including assessing the likelihood of such deviations; this allows the student to prepare for & recognise the onset of pathological occurrences. The module will explore midwifery management and the midwife's role as part of the midwifery team, making management decisions. In addition, the module examines therapeutic interventions encountered during midwifery emergencies and the rationale for their use reflecting current research findings.

Delivery of Module:
Various teaching approaches related to the module content will be utilised e.g. lectures, seminars, self-directed learning, computer assisted learning.
Indicated Lecture Hours (which may also include seminars, tutorials, workshops and other contact time) are approximate and may include in-class tests where one or more of these are an assessment on the module. In-class tests are scheduled/organised separately to taught content and will be published on to student personal timetables, where they apply to taken modules, as soon as they are finalised by central administration. This will usually be after the initial publication of the teaching timetable for the relevant semester.
