Educational aims of the programme

  • The programme aims to provide a high quality, vocational education which is intellectually rigorous and up to date, as well as relevant to the needs of existing and future managers, executives, and other professionals in specific subject areas related to the international financial management service sectors.
  • The programme aims to provide students with international scope and coverage as well as with international exchange opportunities when and where appropriate.
  • The programme aims to draw upon the most recent research to inform teaching and to offer elective modules to provide students with opportunities to specialise in specific aspects relevant to their backgrounds, interests, and aspirations, including progress to PhD level.
  • The programme aims to provide students with opportunities for independent and reflective development as learners, able to continue their learning once in their chosen professions.

This Master's Degree programme is studied full-time over one academic year, consisting of 180 credits at FHEQ level 7*. All modules are semester based and worth 15 credits with the exception of the final project.

Other information

Global and Cultural Capabilities: The key modules of the program strive to be taught in such a way as to present problems in relation to the global context and international perspectives. Students typically come from a wide variety of nationalities and backgrounds. Students are encouraged to engage and learn from different, international perspectives by interacting with others to broaden their own perspectives and interpretations. Short international study exchanges with relevant partner Schools overseas can be offered to interested and selected groups of students, if and when available.

Digital Capabilities: Throughout the program, students learn to use a virtual learning environment (SurreyLearn). They discover digital and online data resources to assist with learning and undertaking research projects. Students are provided the opportunity to become familiar with the possibilities of digital environments and programming languages such as Excel, Mathematica, Stata or Python. Students are encouraged to use modern media such as Teams or Zoom for communication and teamwork.

Employability: The program is designed to provide a variety of assignments and authentic assessments that mimic working life in the banking and financial industry in an international context. Develops and improves students' interpersonal and professional skills. Students are also encouraged to consider additional professional qualifications for which their modules provide adequate preparation, such as the CFA.

Sustainability: To promote the wellbeing of present and future generations, students will focus on the knowledge, skills and attributes needed to understand how to manage the current financial needs, without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own financial needs. The Program will empower students, as future leaders in international financial management, by guiding them towards sustainable investments, socially ethical financial solutions, as well as environmentally friendly green derivatives securities.

Resourcefulness & Resilience (R&R): Within the entirety of the student experience and to prepare graduates for the future work realities, the Programme embeds academic opportunities and challenges to develop the attributes of independence, agility, reflectiveness, self-awareness, proactivity and self-regulation. Scaffolded learning environment offers the right options and levels for learning, support, stretching and assessment for students of all levels. Opportunities for small-group, short international study exchanges, build international networks and promote future partnerships in the areas of international financial management.
