PROCESS SAFETY AND OPERATIONS INTEGRITY - 2021/2

In light of the Covid-19 pandemic, and in a departure from previous academic years and previously published information, the University has had to change the delivery (and in some cases the content) of its programmes, together with certain University services and facilities for the academic year 2020/21.

A teaching and learning module that covers all aspects of safety and reliability in the design and operation of process plant and equipment. Although generally applicable to the full range of business operations, the main focus is on refinery and petrochemical operations where knowledge and understanding will be gained in maintaining the highest standards of process safety and operations integrity.

The assessment strategy is designed to provide students with an opportunity to demonstrate:
· Learning outcomes 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, a, b in the examination, and
· Learning outcomes 3, 4, a, b, c, d in Coursework 1 and 2.
Thus, the summative assessment for this module consists of:
- Examination – 70%, 2 hours (LO1 – LO6)
- Coursework 1 - Written report involving the identification of hazards and risk assessments for continued operation of a refinery process unit with a serious operating problem (LO3) - 15%
- Coursework 2 - Written report into the investigation of the root cause, with follow-up recommendations, of a serious incident on a refinery (LO4) - 15%
Formative assessment and feedback
For each coursework, in class, over separate two week periods, there is an introductory briefing followed by an intermediate discussion of progress with extensive oral feedback and discussion after submission. Individual grades are notified to the students by e-mail a short time later.
- The law regarding general safety, health and environmental (SHE) issues;
- Safety in the design and operation of process units;
- The causes of incidents and means of prevention;
- SHE and corporate social responsibility (CSR).

Methods of Teaching / Learning
The learning and teaching strategy is designed to:
Provide the students with basic knowledge, understanding and skills that will inform them of basic responsibilities for SHE, allow them to recognise hazards and use tools and techniques for reducing and mitigating risk.
The learning and teaching methods include:
11 of 3 hr combined lecture sessions with educational videos, a case study, group working and discussions in class and supportive coursework involving formative assessment.
Indicated Lecture Hours (which may also include seminars, tutorials, workshops and other contact time) are approximate and may include in-class tests where one or more of these are an assessment on the module. In-class tests are scheduled/organised separately to taught content and will be published on to student personal timetables, where they apply to taken modules, as soon as they are finalised by central administration. This will usually be after the initial publication of the teaching timetable for the relevant semester.
