Module Overview

This module is designed to allow students to undertake a support role in a time critical production environment. Students will work in support of assigned departmental work and explore the collaborative nature of production through the communication and delivery of a live performance.
Working within their peer group, freelance and in-house production teams, students will be able to apply and evidence basic skill acquisition in the core activities of the pre-production, production and post-production periods.

Indicative content includes:
Students will work within a small team under the supervision of the GSA staff to facilitate the preparation, rigging, and operation of technical elements for performance. Students may also support the work of a team in the administration, prop sourcing or other activities relating to the work of the stage management department. Students may work variously with freelance/professional teams, second and third year students or in-house technicians on a range of GSA presentations.

Assessment Strategy

In keeping with the Programme's Assessment strategy, the practical assessment is designed to develop the students' knowledge and understanding of the working practices of theatre production and enhance their own self-reflection and personal development.

Summative Assessment will in take the form of a;

Reflective Essay 1500 words -

Formative assessment will be offered during work on your show roles.

Module aims

  • Apply skills learnt in previous class/workshops to the practical realisation of the work of an assigned production department.
  • Aid familiarity and confidence in recognising technical components in their preparation, rigging and operation.
  • Advance students' understanding of the management of a production through practical experience and observation of a production from fit-up to get-out.
  • Provide students with an opportunity to identify and explore further areas of interest and study in one or more subject areas.

Methods of Teaching / Learning

The learning and teaching strategy is designed to:

Enable the student to demonstrate practical application of skills at an introductory level.
Encourage the acquisition of intermediate knowledge and skills in one or more subject areas.
Prompt independent study and development of new found areas of interest within the wider Production Skills portfolio.

The learning and teaching methods include:

Attendance and contribution to production meetings and ad hoc briefings.
Specialist demonstration and instruction (e.g. rigging at height, electrical Health and Safety, etc.) Competency exercises in basic theory and practice of production.
Workshops and ad hoc sessions with visiting creative/ production professionals.
(Hours of activity are dependent upon the size and genre of production, venue and contributing number of freelance or associate professional staff)

Indicated Lecture Hours (which may also include seminars, tutorials, workshops and other contact time) are approximate and may include in-class tests where one or more of these are an assessment on the module. In-class tests are scheduled/organised separately to taught content and will be published on to student personal timetables, where they apply to taken modules, as soon as they are finalised by central administration. This will usually be after the initial publication of the teaching timetable for the relevant semester.

Other information

This is a year long 30 credit module that entails participation multiple practical show roles.

Under the three term structure that commences from academic year 2019/0 – this module’s delivery is year-long due to the teaching occurring in Teaching Blocks 1, 2 and 3.
