Educational aims of the programme
- To enable students to develop a detailed knowledge and deep understanding of civil engineering principles and the ability to apply these appropriately for the benefit of society
- To develop in students an independence of logical thought and a critical approach to evidence, theories and concepts that enables both self-learning and self-evaluation
- To equip students with a range of transferable skills (including teamwork, leadership, management and communication) and to encourage a commitment to continuing personal and professional development
- To provide the accredited educational base required for chartered engineer status
- To produce proactive engineering graduates who are well equipped for employment in the Civil Engineering profession, public service or for university research and who have the skills to impact positively on the tasks they undertake
- In going beyond the requirements of the BEng degree graduates from the MEng programme are expected to demonstrate mastery of complex and specialised areas of knowledge and skills within the area of civil engineering. They should be capable of employing advanced skills to conduct research, or advanced technical or professional activity, accepting accountability for any related decision-making and associated outcomes including the supervision and development of self and others. They should be able to demonstrate that the solutions they develop to meet specific project requirements take account of the wider needs of society
- To develop skills that enable active participation in a digital, connected civil engineering discipline and professional practice
- To develop individual, interpersonal and professional skills, relevant to the professional field of civil engineering.
- To develop competencies to engage effectively with people from different backgrounds in ways that respect the interests of cultural groups and individual rights
- To create the conditions in which students become resourceful and resilient
- Recognize issues related to sustainability in the domain of civil engineering and develop skills to manage the associated complexity
