The purpose of this module is to provide students with the opportunity to develop a further degree of independence in the conception, design, and completion of a musicological, compositional, or performance project, with guidance from a supervisor.

Assessment Strategy
The assessment strategy is designed to provide students with the opportunity to demonstrate:
- independence in the planning, research, and completion of a large-scale individual project
- ability to identify a topic/compositional technique/performance repertoire suitable for treatment in a project of this scope
- ability to identify and critique relevant secondary literature
- knowledge/understanding of your chosen topic/technique/repertoire.
The summative assessment for this module consists of the following options:
12,000-word musicological essay
OR
Composition project including a portfolio of compositions of approximately 20-25 minutes duration and a 5,000-word essay
OR
Performance project including a performance of approximately 20-25 minutes duration and a 5,000-word essay
Formative assessment
• Non-assessed presentations or performances; essay plan; supervisor tutorial comments
Feedback
• Verbal feedback on progress will be supplied in these sessions and during one-to-one tutorials during the year.
• Written feedback in the form of annotations on your drafts or comments on non-assessed performances will be provided by the supervisor
Module aims
- - enable students to engage with issues in musicology, composition, or performance of their own choosing at a level of detail and to an extent not otherwise offered on the programme
- - develop advanced research and creative skills, and to integrate them into a meaningful and coherent project
- - further instil independence of thinking and study, in order to develop resourcefulness, initiative, cultural awareness and capabilities, ability to locate and process advanced digital sources, and employability through all of these transferable skills

The learning and teaching strategy is designed to:
Develop a high degree of independence in the planning, research, and completion of a large-scale individual project.
The learning and teaching methods include:
- A plenary session outlining the aims and methods of the module and the range of topics available.
- Individual tutorial with module leader to identify the project's topic
- Group tutorials
- Individual supervisions
- Individual study
Indicated Lecture Hours (which may also include seminars, tutorials, workshops and other contact time) are approximate and may include in-class tests where one or more of these are an assessment on the module. In-class tests are scheduled/organised separately to taught content and will be published on to student personal timetables, where they apply to taken modules, as soon as they are finalised by central administration. This will usually be after the initial publication of the teaching timetable for the relevant semester.
