Module Overview

This module is designed to introduce to students the concepts of data and business process management and explores the opportunities, benefits and challenges business process modelling and Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) create for the business organisation and its management.

The module provides two sets of objectives:

  • One set of objectives achieved by the class lectures highlights the data and business process management and its implications for the organisation and its managers. 

  • The module also exposes students to modelling business processes using the SAP platform. This objective accomplished in the PC lab will allow students to gain an understanding and hands-on experience of the operation and impact of processes operationalised by information technology.

Each of the topics covered by the course will be critically evaluated to point out the advantages and disadvantages of information technology-driven processes.

Assessment Strategy

The assessment strategy is designed to provide students with the opportunity to demonstrate critical awareness and understanding of how ERP systems' functionalities deliver successful business process management within organisations.

Both formative and summative assessments will be used in the module.

The Summative Assessment consists of:

  • A report

  • SAP Computer Lab Project

Students will keep running reports with weekly entries related to the topics discussed in class.

In the first week, students will pick a large company or subsidiary and apply knowledge from the class session towards the operation of that company, and the impact an SAP (or other ERP) system would have on the way operations are accomplished.

The report will be in alignment with the criteria related to learning outcomes (1, 2 and 3).

For the SAP lab t project), the students will be assessed based on the quality of the Business processes created using the SAP system. The run-down of the operational and financial figures for each process reflects the quality of students' work and allows direct assessment of what went right/wrong at a glance. Students will be informed about the SAP case studies in the beginning of the semester. This will be in alignment with the criteria related to learning outcomes (4 and 5).

Formative assessments: SAP Case studies, class debates, and exercises will be used to assist students in determining their knowledge of the concepts and aid the lecturer in focusing on areas requiring further support. The use of SAP case studies and exercises work will aid the development of a practical understanding of the module's materials.

Verbal feedback in tutorials and computer labs (following work conducted as part of guided learning) will be used to assess the development of knowledge and understanding.

Feedback:  Verbal feedback is provided to the students during the tutorials and computer labs when they work on their SAP projects.

Students will receive individual and group feedback during the module from the lecturer.

Written detailed constructive feedback in the form of comments are provided on the students' submitted assessments.

Methods of Teaching / Learning

The teaching and learning strategy is designed to emphasise management's role in process creation and operation within the business environment and develop student skills needed to manage and work with the SAP software platform.

The teaching and learning methods include the use of theory and computer lab exercises that will demonstrate the practical application of such theories and concepts.

These sessions will be supported by captured content and guided learning exercises, allowing students to understand the subject area deeply and engage with additional learning.

Slides, notes, case studies, additional content and learning exercises will be posted through SurreyLearn.

Lectures will incorporate the use of SAP case studies, exercises, videos, and class discussions.

Web-based learning support and electronic resources will be provided.

Indicated Lecture Hours (which may also include seminars, tutorials, workshops and other contact time) are approximate and may include in-class tests where one or more of these are an assessment on the module. In-class tests are scheduled/organised separately to taught content and will be published on to student personal timetables, where they apply to taken modules, as soon as they are finalised by central administration. This will usually be after the initial publication of the teaching timetable for the relevant semester.

Other information

The module is highly practical and directly teaches key skills needed for graduates going into business intelligence careers.

Critical thinking, employability, disciplinary knowledge, and digital capabilities are a key part of the learning process for the module.

Students will be skilled in the new-age Business Process Management solutions and will gain practical skills in using SAP software in computer labs (Digital Capabilities).

Real world databases and industry-led case studies and examples for practices and assessment are also embedded in the module's content.

Student will learn how to apply SAP to real-world business process management challenges (Employability).
