DATA AND BUSINESS PROCESS MANAGEMENT (WITH SAP) - 2027/8
Module code: MANM527
Module Overview
This module introduces students to the principles of data and business process management and examines the opportunities, benefits and challenges that business process modelling and Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems create for organisations and their management.
The module has two complementary strands.
First, through lectures, students develop a critical understanding of data and business process management and its organisational and managerial implications.
Second, through practical laboratory sessions, students model and operationalise business processes using the SAP platform. These sessions provide hands-on experience of how information systems enable, integrate and transform organisational processes.
Across all topics, students critically evaluate the advantages and limitations of technology-enabled business processes.

Assessment Strategy
The assessment strategy is designed to enable students to demonstrate critical awareness and applied understanding of how ERP system functionalities support effective business process management within organisations.
Both formative and summative assessment methods are employed.
Summative assessment
The summative assessment comprises:
- SAP Computer Lab Project (60%)
- Group Report (40%)
For the Group Report, students select a large organisation (or subsidiary) and apply concepts from the module to analyse how SAP (or another ERP system) supports operational and financial processes. The report aligns with Learning Outcomes 1, 2 and 3.
For the SAP Computer Lab Project, students are assessed on the design and execution of business processes within the SAP system. Evaluation is based on the quality and accuracy of configured processes and the resulting operational and financial outputs. This assessment aligns with Learning Outcomes 4 and 5. Relevant SAP case materials are introduced at the beginning of the semester.
Formative assessment
Formative activities include SAP case studies, practical exercises, class discussions and debates. These activities support the development of applied understanding and provide opportunities for ongoing feedback. Verbal feedback is provided during tutorials and computer laboratory sessions to support progression.
Feedback
Students receive verbal feedback during tutorials and laboratory sessions and written, constructive feedback on submitted summative assessments.
Module aims

The teaching and learning strategy emphasises management¿s role in the design, implementation and governance of business processes within technology-enabled environments. It also develops students¿ applied capabilities in using the SAP software platform.
Teaching methods include lectures and computer laboratory sessions that integrate theoretical concepts with practical application.
Sessions are supported by guided learning activities and recorded materials, enabling students to consolidate understanding and engage with additional learning resources.
Slides, case studies, exercises and supplementary materials are made available via SurreyLearn.
Lectures incorporate SAP case studies, practical exercises, video materials and structured discussions. Web-based learning resources and electronic materials further support independent study.
Indicated Lecture Hours (which may also include seminars, tutorials, workshops and other contact time) are approximate and may include in-class tests where one or more of these are an assessment on the module. In-class tests are scheduled/organised separately to taught content and will be published on to student personal timetables, where they apply to taken modules, as soon as they are finalised by central administration. This will usually be after the initial publication of the teaching timetable for the relevant semester.
