In light of the Covid-19 pandemic the University has revised its courses to incorporate the ‘Hybrid Learning Experience’ in a departure from previous academic years and previously published information. The University has changed the delivery (and in some cases the content) of its programmes. We have updated key module information regarding the pattern of assessment and overall student workload to inform student module choices. We are currently working on bringing remaining published information up to date to reflect current practice during the academic year 2021/22.
This means that some information within the programme and module catalogue will be subject to change. Current students are invited to contact their Programme Leader or Academic Hive with any questions relating to the information available.
The module is available as an alternative to the Placement module offered on the MSc programme that a student is enrolled in.
The Study Abroad module supports students’ academic, personal and professional development as global citizens preparing for a borderless career that requires cross-cultural awareness, ability to collaborate with international partners and navigate different business systems and complex international work arrangements.
The Study Abroad module is concerned with holistic academic and non-academic learning. Additionally, the module aims to enable students to evidence and evaluate their study abroad experiences and transfer that learning to other situations.

The module focuses on achieving the learning outcomes by offering students a chance to complement their Surrey experience with a bespoke study-abroad experience at one of our Partner Universities.
It is designed to give students the opportunity to develop advanced academic knowledge and skills as well as sophisticated professional skills that are required of individuals aspiring to international careers. Students will benefit from comprehensive personal and professional development, honing their professional identity, competencies and attributes that support their future employability and career outcomes.
Students need to take 30 ECTS credits consistent with their level 7 study at a partner university. A minimum of 7.5 ECTS must be in the language or general culture of the country of the hosting institution (as long as it’s not English or the student’s native language); up to 7.5 ECTS can be a credit bearing internship offered by the hosting institution; all other modules must be in business, economics, management, accounting, finance, marketing, entrepreneurship, human resources, business analytics, and related subjects.

In case a student fails short of the requirement to pass the agreed number of credits at the partner institution, they will be required to take an oral exam based on their final report. This will be a pass/fail type of assessment.
The assessment strategy is designed to provide students with the opportunity to demonstrate the learning outcomes of the module. Thus, the summative assessment for this module consists of:
Students must attempt and pass the agreed number of credits at the partner institution in order to successfully meet the requirements of the module.
Completed at the end of their study exchange, this report of 3,000 words requires students to critically reflect on their academic, personal and professional development. Students will also take account of their inter-cultural learning, any language capabilities they may have acquired from studying in a non-native language and reflections on how the study exchange has enhanced their career prospects.
In case a student fails short of the requirement to pass the agreed number of credits at the partner institution, they will be required to take an oral exam based on their final report.

The requirements of the partner institution are applied to any aspect of formative assessment and feedback.

Methods of Teaching / Learning
The learning and teaching methods are predicated on the requirements of the institutional partner.
Where relevant, the academic mentoring, coaching and assessment role of partner institutions are focused on ensuring that students achieve the learning outcomes for the module; these relate to (1) academic, personal and professional development, (2) evaluation of study abroad learning and (3) transfer of study abroad learning.
The partner institution is encouraged to support students’ critical self-reflection and learning.
The assessment of students’ academic attainment for the study element of the placement year is as per the requirements of the partner institution.
Indicated Lecture Hours (which may also include seminars, tutorials, workshops and other contact time) are approximate and may include in-class tests where one or more of these are an assessment on the module. In-class tests are scheduled/organised separately to taught content and will be published on to student personal timetables, where they apply to taken modules, as soon as they are finalised by central administration. This will usually be after the initial publication of the teaching timetable for the relevant semester.
