Educational aims of the programme

  • To instil a broad base of knowledge and understanding in a range of disciplines that inform the study of sport and exercise science, developed from a fundamental appreciation of human biosciences.
  • To promote the application of knowledge and expertise to support professional practice in a variety of exercise environments (fitness, performance and healthcare settings).
  • To encourage student engagement through specialist study and independent research.
  • To encourage the interchange between theory, research and practice.
  • To provide the opportunity for students to undertake professional training and gain vocational qualifications, enhancing career and employment prospects.
  • To provide an educational environment that encourages the acquisition of intellectual, scientific, technical and transferable skills to promote self-directed and life-long learning.
  • To develop a foundation of knowledge in human biosciences with some understanding of its application to sport and exercise.

This Bachelor's Degree (Honours) programme is studied full-time over three academic years, consisting of 360 credits (120 credits at FHEQ levels 4, 5 and 6). All modules are semester based and worth 15 credits with the exception of project, practice based and dissertation modules.
Possible exit awards include:
- Bachelor's Degree (Ordinary) (300 credits)
- Diploma of Higher Education (240 credits)
- Certificate of Higher Education (120 credits)

Full-time with PTY

This Bachelor's Degree (Honours) programme is studied full-time over four academic years, consisting of 480 credits (120 credits at FHEQ levels 4, 5, 6 and the optional professional training year). All modules are semester based and worth 15 credits with the exception of project, practice based and dissertation modules.

On successful completion of the programme students will have acquired the relevant competences to gain employment, pursue BASES Accredited Sport and Exercise Scientist status and/or follow postgraduate programmes. Additional and voluntary vocational fitness assessments are embedded within the course providing students with the opportunity to gain entry to the Register of Exercise Professionals.
